You'll find scanner programming software (FreeScan, ProScan and ARC/Butel) to be like photo eidting software. Some packages do some things that others don't, but not do things that others do.
The only downside I have with ARC is that you have to get a separate program for each "variety" of scanner you have, but the others it is "one program does all".
It's all what you feel most comfortable with and "get along with" that really counts. Most of the ones you pay for have trial packages.
