• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So, I picked up a couple SP50's in an eBay bid last week that came with a VHF GP68. I didn't think much of the GP68 till I got it and did some research. Turns out it's a gem in that it's FPP. Long story short I found a UHF GP68 on eBay to match my VHF model!!!! Of course, both batteries that came with the radios were Ni-Cd and were shot. Also, both radios came with single unit chargers (more on that in a minute). So, I went on eBay and ordered 1 new battery for the VHF, and it arrived. I just ordered another for the UHF yesterday. Well, I realized today that they are Lithium-Ion batteries and not Ni-MH like what was listed on eBay. I'm dealing with the seller on that. My question is (and I believe I already know the answer) will the chargers I have do Lithium Ion? I don't believe they will, but I wanted to check with those of you more knowledgeable as I. The VHF GP68 came with Motorola Single Unit Charger Part #HTN9014B w/the PMLN4069A insert for the GP68. Date code on that is 9718. The UHF came with Motorola Single Unit Quick Charger Part #PMTN4020A w/the PMLN4069A insert for the GP68. It has date code 9805. Also how do I translate those date codes? I cannot find online anything about what chemistry these chargers can and cannot do as well as a battery charger date code lookup tool. Thanks again. Scott (N4SYR)

Nope - those chargers will definitely not charge Li-ion batteries. Ni-cad and Ni-Mh only. Those chargers were made in 1997 and 1998 respectively according to the date codes. One is a fast charger with the red button and the other is the standard slow charger.

Find some 1800 mah batteries on eBay for them - they are all over the place. I bought 2 of them made by EBL for my SP50’s and they work great in those chargers. Got both EBL batteries on eBay for like $25 shipped for the both of them brand new, and the charge lasts for days on standby.

That's what I figured. I don't believe Lithium Ion was a twinkle in anyone's eye back in the late 90's and Ni-MH was probably new. I have some SP50's as well but these GP68's take different batteries than the SP50's. If this seller in eBay can't come up with a Ni-MH battery than I'll go with BatteriesAmerica.com which has them. Even has a battery eliminator!!!!!
