I have been hearing Culpeper County VA on our low band side (33.820) here at the firehouse in Calvert county Maryland and I think they dispatch on the same frequency but not sure. How is it that I have been hearing them so clear? We also listen in on DCFD (154.190) and in the early morning hours we hear FDNY I think Manhattan clear. How is all of this?
It's called atmospheric skip, and when the conditions are right, it will happen. I believe there is some reading material in the Wiki about skip.
