I am wanting to buy a radio scanner in the Ft.McMurray, AB area. I have a couple of questions.

Using Google, I find that there are a couple of different types such as handhelds, trunks, etc. What is a trunk raido and how does it differ from a regular sacanner that most people have? All I want it for is to monitor what is happening in town on the police scanner.

How do I find out what system the RCMP use in Ft.McMurray as I don't want to buy one that is not compatible with theirs?

The Source stores in Ft.Mac are sold out so I am looking to buy a used one.

TIA

Hey there.
Does anyone know if there are any trunked systems up in the fort? I would be surprised if there wasn't with all the oil development up there.

Quick answer, if there are any trunked systems, go for a bc246, it's cheap and will be a great intro into scanning. If there are no trunked systems, you may be able to go with a used older scanner and get as much out of it for cheaper...

I did a brief check for "Syncrude" in the TAFL and they have a whole whack of frequencies in the 851-ish range common for 800 trunks, so it's quite possible. ("A whole whack", btw, is the technical definition. :) )

After I finish putting in all the iDEN towers I have records for, maybe I'll peel out the Syncrude/Suncor/etc stuff in the hopes that having them in the DB might entice folks to submit data for them.
