Not to highjack but the subject fits my question so figured I'd ask....

The usb cable isn't nothing special just a regular USB at one end and mini-USB at the other...correct?

That's correct, the programming cable for the HP-1 is a common cable, USB mini on the HP-1 end, and the full size USB "A" connector on the computer end.

I don't think there is anything special about it.

I use the same cable that I use to program my Garmin GPS.

Actually, that cable will work for connecting a GPS, but is not USB.

Actually in the non scanner world the connector for the GPS on the Uniden is used as a USB connector for many digital cameras.
I go to Goodwill in the area and get many cables with the 4 pin connector and cut off the USB end and rewire it for the GPS without the need of adapters.
