I just downloaded all the Medevac frequencies for our area and for example for one of the frequencies I have is the following" 156.18000 ctcss/dcs: 156,step: auto mode: auto. I know in some of the nfm/fm/am settings most are set to nfm. should I change that to FM or leave it? the next question is in order to pick up transmissions better would be be better to leave the ctcss tone at 156 or to turn tones off?

Thanks

If the database itself shows FM, then set the scanner to FM. If it shows NFM, then set it to NFM.

Programming the CTCSS will help prevent interference from other agencies who are on the same frequency and from some sources of RF interference. If there are no other local agencies on that frequency, it is really optional.

In general, a more specific answer can be provided if you can provide more specific information about where you are or what system you are trying to receive (a link to the database page is most helpful).

It looks like maybe you are talking about:http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=2439 (which shows FM for that freq)?

yes that is it. On the data base downloaded from here, I got the mode as auto- i did not see any individual modes.
I live in Greenlee County Arizona- the smallest and least populated county in the state.
Thanks
