• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Is it possible for one side of a conversation on a conventional VHF system to be analog, and the other half to be digital?

In other words- Dispatch analog, and mobiles digital?

Yes to an extent, you can set it all up however you want. An ASTRO radio can be set up to receive either analog or digital but from what I recall, transmit in digital only. Analog TX is analog Rx only.

When it comes to consoles the digital transmission is done by the DIU. So it's a matter of setting up two channels, one for analog and one for digital. I'm not sure why you'd want to, but you can.

Just curious.... since I monitor one conventional system that uses both full encryption, and one way encryption.. it got me to thinking, could this work simularly with digital to analog....

Mobiles encrypted, dispatch analog.... mobiles digital, dispatch analog....

Thanks for the input wayne

You can hear dispatch clearly, and the mobile side will be using "secure", in other words encrypted. Its set up this way on some TRS's also... seems to be a common thing now. But the agency I monitor only does this for special ops, and narcotics. I have never heard dispatch go encrypted yet,.. only mobiles. And yes, I am very very sure its encryption, nothing else in the world sounds like encrypted comms.

I never new that they set it up that way. Sounds kind of half ass dose it not? probabley because there consoles don't carry no encryption capability or it is a money thing. So are you monitoring the normal trunked frequencies for this or the inputs? I think you are just monitoring the normal trunking. Have to forgive me there is a encrypted talk group over here and just did not hear dispatch on it yet. Although it might never have dispatch. One day! You did say some trs's so this one might not do that.

What is the DIU?

This is an VHF conventional system. But the same technique is being used on some TRS's. If you ever have a lot of spare time.. browse through the entire listing for Public Safety TRS's on the DB.. you will find at least four that have one way encryption engaged.... dispatch clear, mobiles encrypted,.. but they use it full time on the TRS's.... Whereas its only done so far on specail ops, and narcotics for this conventionl system.

not true, mixed mode RX can be set in both analog TX mode and ASTRO TX mode.
