What brought me back to Scanners after a long, long hiatius, was the inheratance (Actually, saving it from a toss into the Dumpster!) of a sweet old Radio Shack Pro-31 that my Son in Law had bought for some forgotten reason long ago.
I gotta say this Japanese made radio is a real sweetheart! It's recieve and audio clarity are up to the top of the class, and it's hefty 6 "AA" battery powerpack seems to last forever with today's hot rechargable's stuffed inside!
In spite of it's limited capabilities (no search function and only 10 channels), it's my primarary, running all day on a wall wart, hooked to the Big Antenna, "Home Unit". It carries my local S.O., P.D., F&G, 2M/440, Echo Link and GMRS comms.
It seems the Japanese used a more open VHF monitoring range, which extends from 380-512MHz.
The lower 380 to 420MHz opening has intrested me since acquireing the unit last fall. Apparentlly some small California Airports use the 380-395MHz for some Air Ops, but the only other information I can find on this lower frequency range is that the US Navy and US Air Force use fragments of it.
For what? I do not yet know?
I am in Central Calif, and the majority of information on the 380and upMHz frequs that I have found are located in the Mid-West and East, mainlly Military base references...
I'd sureappreciate any info on this 380-420MHz span and just what I might look for, now that I have a frequency capable reciever/Scanner in these ranges? Sure would be nice to locate some California action on these frequencys!
JMHO, but you can sure tell the difference between Japanese and Chinese assembly and quality. Kinda like the older Japanese Rifle Scopes...
Thanks if y :?: all can help with some info here!

Dave,
The UHF air band is AM and goes from 225-406 mHz. I don't believe the Pro-31 can operate on AM in the 380 to 512 band, only FM, so you really can't listen to air traffic on the Pro-31. There are federal government frequencies in the 406 to 420 Mhz band that are FM and that you can listen to. One that comes to mind is the Federal Protective Service on 417.200 mHz.

Thanks!

Jim,
Appreciate that!
I have found very little info about this old gal anywhere (of course my computer "search" skills aren't all they should be...) but there was one site which DID have the owners manual to download which was cool!
I just need to wipe off the open-eyed look on my face these days from realising all I have missed in scanning since I left years ago and start learning it again!
I still enjoy the old Pro-31 for the reasons stated above and will continue to explore what it'll do? Luckilly there is still much activity within it's reach.
Thanks again,
Dave13
