I have an Icom R5 that I am thinking of replacing with the R20. I am wondering if anyone could comment on how the R20 performs on the shortwave bands. I like the fact that the R20 receives USB/LSB, but I am curious as to how sensitive/selective this radio is for this kind of monitoring...

Thanks

OK, in a pinch

If it's anything like my R10, VR500 or X2000, not so hot. That's due to the W-I-D-E filter. I believe it's something like 4kc wide. You would be better off keeping the R5 and adding an R75 to your collection.

I think the R20 is great on HF. I often get several 80 meter signals just using the supplied telescopic whip. It seems to very sensitive and it has incredible audio. It's the best hand held HF receiver I've ever used. Plus, you have the digital recorder built in that allows you to record up to 4 hours to audio instantly.

I use the R20 for VHF & UHF but sometimes I do listen to HF with an AOR Loop Antenna and it receives excellent signals and I also use an MFJ-959B and you should also consider the AOR-8200MK3.
