I use my R5 for shortwave and generally find it to be "ok" but not great. If you have a really strong signal you can generally pick it up well, but tuning for weaker signals with the stock antenna is difficult to impossible. This may be due to my location in downtown chicago as well as surrounded by a lot of cement and steel.
For starters I would agree with programming in the "Hot 100 SWL" List mentioned above (some R5's came from the factory with this already in)
Right now I'm having good luck picking up 13.675mhz around 10:00-11:00am CST here in Chicago.
