RACOM, what is it? How is it used? Is it a frequency? I feel like I'm missing something here in the land of frequenceies. I have never really been able to understand how it works and what type of scanner can I get that will receive RACOM users. Is this where trunk tracking comes in or is that something entriely different? Anyone who can shed some light on how all this works please let me know! Thanks.

Or rack'em as some say it. Makes interop a lot easier for some places such as Iowa because a lot of agencies are on the same system, so they just go to a common shared TG.

It's just one huge multi-site EDACS system, and has taken a strong hold in Iowa Law Enforcement and Hospitals.

I Listen to the Lincoln, NE Racom tower and often pick up a Norfolk PD talkgroup, the occasional conversation on a Seward talkgroup, and frequently hear Lifenet and Lifecom out of Omaha, which are the Life Flight helicopters, as well as Star Care V, based in Lincoln. A lot of business also use the Racom network. Occasionally, you can catch Racom Ops using their talkgroups as well. It can make for some pretty interesting listening.

The city of Lincoln and Lancaster County also uses Racom (now M/A Com or MA/Com, I can never remember), but do not use the Racom tower network, rather owning two of their own towers.

Lincoln/Lancaster county actually leases the radio equipment from Racom. Racom isn't MA COM.

Yes, they lease the radio equipment, but Lincoln/Lancaster owns the towers and they have for years.

Perhaps I misunderstood when I read it, but M/A-Com acquired Racom, both are now owned by Tyco, further to look at the radios LPD uses, they are clearly branded M/A-Com, so unless I misunderstood something, I stand by the statement that Racom = M/A-Com.

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! Racom is a private company in Marshalltown, IA, founded by the late Greg Miller and still run by his family. They are dealers for M/A-COM and Kenwood. They operate one of the largest EDACS systems in the nation, so it is natural that they are have a close relationship with M/A-Com, but they are separate entities.
