plain language use required

Can yall give me a crash course on the civilian radio codes. like the 4 digit codes that the police force uses

All Virginia law enforcement entities at all levels have been mandated not to use 10 codes in comms because of the possibility of confusion and miscommunications. They complied because if they didn't they would not be eligible to receive Homeland Security and other federal grants. The VSP still can use their signal codes but not 10 codes. Occasionally somebody will forget as I still hear "10-4". Old habits are hard to break.

If I remember correctly, Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff changed the mandate and advised all agencies they could use their 10-codes- just not in an event that involved other jurisdictions outside of their agency.

I was in Richmond earlier in the week and heard 10 codes in use. I can't recall if it was the City or one of the counties on the TRS.

pretty much all of them there use the basic 10 codes. richmond uses the most. chesterfield about 99.9% of the time will use 10-4, 10-5, 10-8, and 10-99

I hear 10-4 from just about everyone. That is the one 10 code that I am sure no one cares if they keep using since that is the one basically universal code. Never heard 10-4 meaning anything other than what it does.

You are correct. When the change came about signal 1 through 4 and 10-4 are the only acceptable codes. Any otherwise shall be plainly spoken in suggested terms.
