• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I prefer to use my own radio for work (Firefighter/Paramedic) as I work per diem for other departments in addition to my full time department. I have an APX8000 and would like to find a way to insure it against accidental damage. Does anyone know of a good insurance option? I don’t want to use a homeowner insurance add-on as I don’t want to lose my homeowners insurance should I have to make a claim for the radio. Thank you.

If you are a member of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), you can opt for a very reasonable insurance policy for a single item, your entire ham shack contents including computers, or mobile installation. I've had it for years and only had to use it once.

When you had to make a claim, was the process easy? Did they give you any hassle about paying out the policy?

Except using something for public safety/life safety and not hobby use in an IDLH setting (not at your house or "shack") for work and not play may be a problem. Hard to justify an $8000 radio intended and used for work a part of one's amateur radio station, nevermind the part about explaining to an adjuster or certifying on a loss form that you carried insured item into a burning structure intentionally. CLAIM DENIED.

+1 for VFIS

They’ve covered everything from personal radios, pagers, vehicle damage, etc for members of our department for incidents that occurred while they were performing duties related to the department.

I carry a radio for my full time job outside the fire service. They assured us they would covered the cost if it was damaged while doing something related to the FD.

You may be able to cover the radio under personal homeowner insurance against loss, theft, or damage.
Operationally, RF is some really strange stuff and nobody will cover something like that.

Maybe renters insurance or home owners insurance covers ham radio gear in some cases.

I know of 2 Insurance companies that will cover LODD in Life Insurance also your home Insurance will not cover a loss like you willing putting your radio in danger. Most people have no idea that your Insurance Company will not cover you when you are in the active military competing in a speed event skydiving or willingly go into a burning building.
