Just turned on the receiver at 2300 UTC to hear the English language broadcast from an old friend back on shortwave. 9690 kHz to North America, it was followed by French at 2330. Good signal here, glad to have them back!
Did they ever go? I know they greatly reduced their service after howls of rage from all the Spanish fishermen in the southern oceans who lost their news from home and so a skeleton service was kept with frequencies to suit propagation for them. I used to get REE with phenomenal signal strength on the gray line in the late afternoon on a 5MHz frequency. It was so strong I had a look on Google maps to see where the transmitters were - found they were right on my "antipode" directly opposite me on the globe so any path from them went to me! There's a sound bite somewhere, I'll see if I can dig it out.
Thanks for that - so now I know it was your late afternoon and early evening, but my mid morning or midday - so not a lot of activity in the band at my time of day - but it was good for the Spanish fishermen in the South Atlantic which it what the uproar was about the REE changed their schedules.
REE again! 12.030MHz, 0900local/2000UTC until 2030 - news and sports mainly fútbol of course in Spanish, +20dB over s9 - incredible! My 'antipode' is just a bit to the west of Madrid so every propagation path passes through here from there! 45ft/15ft OCFD up about 20ft with a homebrew 9:1 unun with a braid breaker into my favourite JRC NRD515.
I used to listen to REE during my teens. They offered Spanish lessons in a segment called "Spanish Without Tears", which was fun, because I was already studying Spanish in a two-year course in high school and receiving top marks. Now I've forgotten most of what I had learned. Not surprising, because that was more than 50 years ago.
Always loved the music they played -- lots of Spanish guitar and folk music. Would come in S3-S4 steady on 19 meters on a daily basis during the afternoons early this decade... I haven't heard them since they came back on the air, though.
Tonight's English language program sounded like a "new" vs the rerun's that have been on lately. It's 21:23edt / 01:23utc and still coming in strong into central Ohio.
