I'm using Radio Unit ID naming for fun, and I'm having a difficult time with Petersburg VA system naming. I'm seeing alot of 47000## numbers as well as various 4 digit codes for RUIDs, how do I determine which is portable or mobile, or is that really able to be determined by the ID code?

I've noticed 7 digits are normally newer APX series, 4 digits could be older Radios, at least here in Hampton Roads. Best way to do it is to start with Fire, figure out the officer's portable when they're on a call and when he uses the mobile in the cab, same with PD, figure out what radio is mobile vs portable by listening when they are on a traffic stop. When it comes 7 digits you have to really pay attention to the ranges. Or if PFD has a morning radio test or roll call is another way, half the time their going to use a portable. Also if you have ambulance to hospital channel that's on the TRS you can use them.

It all depends on how the programming shop set up the Radio ID plan (e.g.: Did they actually assign blocks to mobiles, portables and consoles, or did they just take the next available group of IDs when programming a shipment of radios?).

In Virginia Beach, the radio IDs are set up like 558XXXX, the number after 558 usually indicates which department the radio belongs to and if it's a portable or mobile. For example:
VBPD Mobiles: 5583XXX, 5584XXX
VBPD Portables: 5580XXX, 5581XXX
VBFD Mobiles: 5585XXX
VBFD Portables: 5584XXX
VBEMS Mobiles: 5587XXX
VBEMS Portables: 5586XXX
Logging unit IDs for VBPD is no fun. They're always changing radios around so there's really no point. VBFD on the other hand is worth getting the unit IDs. I've been working on a spreadsheet for the IDs since about July and have gotten a decent amount
logged. They're not all entirely accurate but it's something.
