Is there a way to determine what a specific radio ID is on a 396xt?

For example, in my GRE PSR500 I can set it to display what a particular radio ID is on an active trunked channel.

I asked Paul for that when the 246 came out .. and he didn't think that there was any demand for it and it wasn't worth the effort / money it would take to do it.

I think that this is totally wrong as there is demand .. maybe they will listen to the users and do it sometime soon.

The info is there on the control channel .. so it isn't hard to do.

I agree, I know people that have bought the GRE just for the Radio ID (some not all)
maybe they were in between the Uniden and the GRE, and that was the feature that put it over the top

I don't think I would purchase the radio just for RID display, however having said that, it is a great feature to have on the XT.

That is exactly why I went ahead and spent my money on the RadioShack PRO-106. Uniden is nice for compact, sturdy scanners. However, I will suffer for the RID feature and I know many a person that would, also. Now, if Uniden were to promise and add RID in a Firmware Upgrade, I would be more than happy to purchase the BCD396XT. In fact, I prefer Uniden over RS and GRE. But, the lack of RID is what drove me to RS/GRE.

I for one have never understood the allure of displaying radio IDs..to me it just seems like more of a pain in the ass, always having to go back and edit your programming every time somebody takes a different radio off the shelf, or takes a different car, etc.

While I agree it's not a dealbreaker for me, the "radio swapping" doesn't always happen. In our agency, the dispatcher ID never changes, and the rig IDs never change, and the portables are usually same rig but at least the same station. So 80% of comms are always identified correctly.

Thank you.. well said.
Hopefully Uniden realizes this. Doesnt look to be on the 996XT either

The local agency here has 100s of vehicles and they are swapped around a lot. It would be useful for the motorcycles but I think that would be about all. I'm not sure how I would use the RID feature.

Well for those who wouldnt need it, maybe it could be turned off (like it can be on the GRE/RS)... that way those who dont need it dont have to use it... those who do need it can use it.

How does radio ID work. Is it displayed with talkgroup information when there is a transmission on a TRS? So say in some place there is a EMS 3671. Does that number get displayed in the radio ID or is it a code that you'd have to memorize or have a list to know that the radio belongs to EMS 3671?

You see BOTH the TG and radio ID.

On the GRE / RS handheld scanners (PSR-500 Pro-106) its on the bottom line..
So you still get to see

object #
VC/DG Frequency
TG ID / name you gave the ScanList
Radio ID

So would look like
Scn0855 TGRP pID
DG 413.425
EMS3671 / Ambulance
Radio ID: 8704

On the GRE radios you can alpha tag radio ids by creating a private object and entering in the radio id instead of the talkgroup id.
The alpha tag is then displayed instead of the radio id # on the bottom of the display.

Very wanted feature! I hopes that Uniden will do it soon in new XT line.

But another is not clearly to me. Why Uniden being the leader of the market always in a catching up role? GRE adds functionality much earlier. And Uniden makes something only after that. NAC decoding added in Unidens 1 year later...

How about we Reverse your statement: Uniden was the first to come out with Dynamic Memory...GRE only came out with their version "Object Oriented Memory" (Worse feature name ever btw) later on after Uniden had their Dynamic Memory out for a good while...So GRE doesn't always "add functionality much earlier"...Heck, I don't even see Fire Tone Out decode (or Fire Tone Out) in any GRE radio...so I guess GRE is playing catch up in features too....
A more accurate statement would be to say that each manufacturer tries to come out with unique features that the other has not thought of yet...which makes everyone happy in the long run...

You mean things like:
* Compact size
* GPS Control
* Dynamic Memory
* Close Call
* Motorola Trunking
* EDACS Trunking
* LTR Trunking
* Motorola Patch
* Motorola I-Calls
* EDACS I-Calls
* Band Scope
* P25 Single-Frequency Trunking
* Fire Tone-Out
* Startup Configurations
* Remote Head
* IF Exchange
* Upgradeable firmware
* Keysafe Mode
* PC Control
* Record output control

All of the above were Uniden firsts (and in many cases, they are still exclusive).
