Hello, you would be better off buying an ICOM-PCR1500 or the PCR-2500 and it cost around the same price but you have yourself a wideband receiver and you can also use to listen to HF.

or you can get an Icom IC-718 (or any other Ham HF radio) and if you someday plan to transmit on it, you have a radio that will do it already.

I would go with the R-75. While there are Icom's new computer controlled black box radios but their HF performance is an unknown quantity. The R-75 is a known quantity and well regarded receiver and a very good performer especially now that they come included with the DSP option. If this is your first “big” HF receiver I would definitely say go with the R-75 and leave the computer controlled gear for the next purchase. Just my opinion of course.

You should see a remarkable improvement over your grundig radio if it is the model I believe it is. I say that with qualifications. That radio will only be as good as it's antenna. You need to connect that R-75 to a good outdoor antenna or it simply isn't going to perform. Paired with a good antenna the R-75 should perform great and well, spank your grundig.

The R-75 will be far better than the Grundig. As KC2GOG said, if you are planning on "upgrading" in the future, I'd go for the IC-718. You can purchase Icom equipment that has been factory reconditioned from HamAV Electronics. Right now they have the 718 for $464.95 and the R75 for $499.00.
Good buy.

RadX,

With a simple modification the 718 and just about all ham HF transceivers will transmit across pretty much all of their included ranges starting at around 1.6mhz and everywhere up from there.

But it will be illegal to do so. Some folks will scream their heads off advising you not to do this while others could care less. That will be a personal decision for you to make. It is clear though that tens of thousands of folks worldwide DX on 11 meters (freebanding) with little or no legal consequence. So again, to do so is up to you.

good luck

See thats the thing all i was wanting is the R75 for recieve but then i thought well if a 718 is cheaper all i would be able to use is the 11 meter since im not a HAMer
all i seen an add where there are only doing an output power of .5w and 2w, and also 10w but 10w is llegal on 11meter

How come the R75 is so much more than

A 718 which you can talk on dosnt make any sence?

I love your signature. What kind of earphone do you recommend with that?

Basically, the reason the receivers are so expensive is simply because the dealers sell very few of them compared to transceivers. The simple law of supply and demand.

You can buy a used transceiver-such as an icom '706 for what a new receiver costs, and have similar RX performance. Plus, what others have said. IF you decide to get your amateur radio license- It will serve you well there too.
