I have a 2340H Icom and the mike gain needs to be turned down. does anyone know if and how this can be done. Been trying to research it, but am coming up blank. Seen where the 2350H has no way to adjust it, but nothing on the 2340H.

Go to this web site and download the service manual.

Take off the covers and find the audio deviation pot and turn down the deviation
while listening on another radio on a simplex channel while connected to a dummy
load so you can hear whether your turning the pot in the correct direction. Make
sure you make a note of the position of the pot before you turn it in case you need
to put it back for any possible reason.

NOTE: Not sure if there is a audio gain pot but of there is try turning that down first.

A word of warning; DO NOT mess with the deviation without a service monitor! It is usually set at the factory for +/- 4KHz which gives a little wiggle room on the legal side of things. Too little and your audio will be low no matter where the mic gain is set and too much will not only exceed the 5KHz limit but you'll deviate outside the receive IF passband causing distortion and repeaters will dropout on you.

Now why do you think the mic gain needs to be lowered? A bit of specific information would help. FYI, you don't have to eat the mic; holding it an inch or two from your lips and talking across it, not into it is the recommended way to use a hand mic.

As long as he is turning it down and does some testing on simplex with a dummy
load he is pretty safe. I used to do this before I had a service monitor and got pretty
good at it. A lot of the radios from japan seem to have the deviation set a bit high as
compared to how we set them up here is the usa. I have noticed this on many of the
yaesu, icom, kenwood and especially alinco radios.

Thanks. I am the original owner of the rig. It's an antique. I do not have the expertise to do this and IF it is done, a person I trust and know his work will do it. I can hold the mike about 5 inches away and it will not over drive. My problem is REMEMBERING to do that. I have been talking on radio's for nearly 55 years and old habits are hard to break. I have a tendency to talk into the mike and keep it close to my mouth. I have downloaded the service manual. We will not mess with the deviation, that's for sure. I am going to hook it up today and get my buddy up the street to do some testing. i.e. talking across the mike.

I guess we'll have to send you back to the factory for some memory reprogramming, the software is only available under license. (;->) At least you don't talk into the back of the mic as I have observed some people......

Still using it. Have done a lot of testing. Mike 3 inches from the mouth it's a little coarse but useable. 5 inches away sounds fine. 8 inches away sounds fine a little low on volume. Even tried talking into the back of the mike at 5 inches :>) and it sounded good from the reports. I am going to offer to sell it to a friend who only has a 5 watt HT. It will be a "as is" sell and he will be told of the problem. Hate to part with it but I need an upgrade for the truck.
