Radio Project--Soon to Come to Life!

Myself and another area monitor have been working on putting a remote
operated receiver in operation on a 3300 foot mountain top here in
North Georgia for about the past 5 months. Well, it's finally looking
like it's going to be up and running soon. I just received some of the
final approvals from the owner of the antenna site on Ogelthorpe
Mountain in Jasper, Georgia. This mountain antenna site also hosts
FAA ATC RCAG for the Ogelthorpe sector for Atlanta Center and a few
other private antenna sites. The tower that my antenna is going on
is at 100 feet, Putting antenna elevation at around 3400 feet. Also
the building that the Icom receiver and PC are setup in has it's own
dedicated DSL line for my radio and PC. The building also has a large
military generator for power backup and is climate controlled. From
this extreme elevation it is absolutely unreal how far you can hear
aircraft that are in the air. For airborne transmissions, I estimate
coverage from around Mississippi to lower Ohio to Northern Florida.
This will include many MOA's and offshore warning areas.

For an antenna system I am using an Ant-197 military discone due to
it's ability to survive extreme weather conditions that it would be
subjected to on this mountain. Also, I have added some notch filters
to the setup to prevent receiver de-sensing from adjacent
transmitters. For coax, I am going to use LMR-600 and inline surge
protectors and other lightning protection equipment.

If you are familiar with the popular site www.dxtuners.com,
it will work much the same as those receivers. You will connect
via the Internet and will operate the control software from your PC. I
have no interest in making money from this setup, Just a very lucky
opportunity that I have to get access to such a great antenna site.
The general interest of the receiver will be milair communications.

I am coming to all the area monitors that would be interested in the
use of the radio for a few reasons. First of all, I would love to hear
from anyone with comments or suggestions. I am also gauging interest
in the project, So if you would like access to use the radio please
let me know. Please send your emails to vampire11@... .

I plan on pushing the audio out via a live feed at first with a
chatroom. Only the site operators(myself and another) will have
control privilege until I understand more about bandwidth issues and
get the bugs out. After things are worked out I will start granting
people that have interest in control privileges.

This is looking to be an exciting and powerful milair listening tool!
I look forward to hearing from the group with all your comments and
suggestions.

Sounds awesome! Wish I could do something like that here. Boy I'd love to have a receiver on Santiago Peak or something :)

Jody;
Let us know how/where you get a connector for the ANT 197 discone.I beleive these to be a type "HN" connector. They are pretty rare and exotic. The military had the exclusive on that connector a few years ago.A bit larger than the regular "N" connector.
I bought a military UHF discone about a year ago with one of those "odd" connectors on it.I did some surgery to the discone, and replaced it with a "N" connector.
That ANT 197 looks like it could be a job to get into,to replace a connector.
Good luck!
