A scanner will probably be more versatile.

Be advised, though, the Nevada gaming industry isn't very radio tolerant and you should be extremely discrete about bringing any radio equipment into a casino.

Unless you are a licensed amateur radio operator, a "walkie talkie" would be (at the least) useless and (at the worst) get you into some serious difficulties.

Then they politely ask you once to leave?

I was at a ham radio convention back around 1970-1971 and someone used their handheld at a gaming table. We were in the hotel where the convention was being held. Things went downhill real fast after this ham spoke into his HT. I think it is a violation of state law to do what he did. The hotel marketing staff did not inform us of this rather serious matter, so we were all let go with a kick in the pants sort of thing (very strong warning). Needless to say we didn't repeat the scenario!

I believe casinos take a dim view to any communication devices near gaming tables, so I'd avoid those specific situations for any misunderstandings and be discrete any other times should there be attracted attention for mere possession of any such device

What he said.
I've lived in NV since 1974. Video surveillance is everywhere and using a radio (or even a cellphone) around active pit games (Craps, 21, poker etc.) or the Sports Book may earn you a chat with Casino Security, especially in the larger clubs. They have the right to ask you to leave the premises and could even get LE involved if they suspect any illegal activity, sooooo: You're better off doing all your scanning (there's all
kinds of it in Laughlin!) and comm activities anywhere other than a casino. Harrah's has a beach area on the river; as a hotel guest you can
sit at a table under an umbrella with a drink, the RR NV/AZ database and freq hunt to your heart's content. There's a lot going on in Bullhead City
as well so bring a couple extra batteries and enjoy your stay in Nevada!

Okay thanks what about if you are with your family and you live outside of nevada

I was directly beneath one of the many security cameras. My scanner was strapped to my side. You see, I did not win much. In fact, I lost most of my money. However, had I hit big, I bet they would have examined my radio.

One horrible Casino near Sloan, Iowa, where hardly anyone wins, once told me to put up my radio. I never returned.

While I've never done so, I see no reason why one couldn't use their scanner in their hotel room--but I'd make sure to keep it out of sight from the housekeeping staff when you're not in the room.

Once removed from a casino, ALL casinos on the strip (and elsewhere) share video of those trespassed from the premise. You might not be able to get into ANY casino after that, if they see your face on a camera. They use face software. Don't tempt fate, or the gaming commission.

The majority of Clark County is served by the Las Vegas Metro PD. North Las Vegas has their own PD, as does Boulder City, Henderson, UNLV, and Las Vegas-Paiute tribal PD.

Stay AWAY from all the gaming floors with comm gear/receivers.
