The Radio Shack 20-043 is a copy of the Diamond D130J. The major difference being that the Radio Shack version uses thin hollow tubing for the long lower elements. The Diamond uses solid stainless steel elements. The Diamond cost about $30.00 more. Performance wise, they should be about equal.

Depending on the specific bands you're monitoring, there may be better choices. A discone is wide-band, but not optimum at any band. For instance, it would not be your best choice if you are trying to improve reception in the 800MHz band.

Radio Shack 20-043

I have a Radio Shack 20-043 and am happy with its performance. I works well and has been up now for several years without any problems. We get some pretty good storms here in Northern Ohio and it has stayed together.

Radio Shack scanner Antenna

I bought that antenna 2 months ago and had recieve problems with it. It worked on one scanner and not the rest. I tried everything i could think of with no success including different adapters and cable. I checked continuity and it checked ok. I used it on a pro-97,96,2050,95,and 2053 and it only worked on the 2050. The other scanners work perfectly. I finally rebuilt another RS antenna and it works fine. I can pick up channels up to 50-60 miles away. This antenna cost $25.00 at RS. Hope this helps and yes i took it back.

I have the RS discone, and have been using it for slightly more than a year now. It has held up nicely and survived several high wing storms.

I did follow someone else's advise, though, and in adition to using set screws on each of the elements, I applied a little "lock tite" to each one.
