I believe your refering to the RS 20-176 commonly refered to as the sputnik. Everyones experiences are different due to location. The discone would cover more bands than the 20-176. While the 20-176 advertises as a wide coverage antenna it is optimized for 152 - 470Mhz. From what I have read it is not very good on VHF low and does poorly on 800Mhz.

Since you have the RS Discone 20-043, you will be disappointed with the performance of the 20-176. I found the Discone is far superior in the mid 400Mhz range, and the 800Mhz range monitoring a Motorola Type II Smartnet.

I found that the RS 20-176 make a really good TV antenna and it out performs the RS Discone 20-043 hands down. I don't have any fancy test equipment, so I have to make due with what I have.

i have the bigger of the 2 rs discones in the attic.i'm pretty happy with the performance.one thing.since they are made out of cheap crap metal, they tend to twist, bend and break off piece's when used outside.for the price <about $80.00> it ain't bad.

Until the OP tells us what band he wants to hear, we're all just making assumptions. He probably wants everything but we don't know that yet.

True DDAN, but if he is using Discone antenna's or wideband (same thing) then i doubt (but i am assuming and we all know what happens when you assume), then i would guess he is NOT trying to Lock into a specific band.
And for the cost, there are much better antennas available then the RS models,

But your right, the OP needs to specify What they are trying to receive.
