What is the latest on the Radio Shack financial situation?

Are they getting ready to close their stores and sell everything off ??

Scanning USA magazine did an excellent piece about the deplorable sales help that is employed in many of the chain's stores. In the NYC tri state area, I can certainly attest to that. Maybe elsewhere it's different, but I love calling them on the phone and predictably the sales person tells me to go to the website for an answer. So pathetic it's almost funny...

Yes I agree with you Archie. The same situation here in Tampa, Florida, and most of the stores in the south. I worked for Radio Shack for six years in the late 90's in NYC area. The pay scales was four tier levels, with T4 being the highest at 7%, and less for name brand. To get that level you had to have worked several years, past numerous certifications, etc.
What it meant was that you got little pay, but was suppose to know everthing about cellphones, satellite television, DSL, internet, etc. If business was slow(when it was not Xmas) you don't make commission and you get miminum wage.
Imagine working their for 5 years at minimum wage, while my counterparts at Circuit City, Best Buy was making above $10 an hour. What this meant was that people with electronic skills went to work at those places. I got fed up, especially being transferred to different locations , sometimes at low volumn stores and went to engineering school.
It is a shame to see a company that was in the fore front of technology end up like this.

According to the latest poll, the whole corporation should be bankrupt by the end of 2007.

And yes, I just made that up.... :)

It may be made up, but it sounds reasonable to me :)

I know that this forum is "I h8 Rat Shack!!11!!" But personally, i'm going to be sad to see it go. I've been going there for all of my radio needs since I started scanning. I know that now it's "omg dey only sell cell phones now dey suck" I still like Radio Shack (Even though the Customer service is ****). When they close, the only place i'm going to get my Radio needs from is the Internet. And for me, it's hard to do that. I don't have PayPal or anthing like that.

I'd be sad to see them go to... If not for sentimental reasons, than anything else. I bought many a gadget there when I was a kid. As far as bad service goes, you could pretty much say that about most stores now. But that's the price we as consumers pay for always trying to get stuff cheaper.

I thought I read something from them that said 400-700 stores would be closed, it is still possible they will survive the same way Safeway did during the 80's by closing multiple locations and scaling back. I can count no less than 3 Shacks in my area for a population of 100k. Probably one or 2 could handle if the high traffic locations are kept but service will certainly be ahem, questionable. Their locations in smaller towns that dont have a full time cellular dealer seem to do well.
