Hope i put this in the right section. I was at my grandmas house and she told me she had a problem with her scanner. Its a Radio Shack Pro-2052. One morning at around 5:30 the scanner started to stop searcing.(if that makes any sence) It was like someone turned down the squelch. But she turned it all the way up and it still didnt help. I listened to it for a while. When you turn it on its fine. But wait about 3 min and it does it. I tried pushing the seach button but it was acting like it was programing. It just wouldnt scan. I an guessing its something wrong with the squelch. Can anyone help me out? And info would really help. Thanks

I dont own a 2052, so I'm not sure if this will work, but, did you try to reset the scanner?

Just so you are aware, preforming this function will CLEAR all the saved frequencies in the scanner. If you have stored any frequencies, they will be deleted.

DIRECTIONS FOR RESETTING THE SCANNER:
1. Turn the unit off.
2. While holding down the 2 and the 9, turn the scanner on.
3. CLEAR should come up on the display until the unit resets itself.

I included a link to the pro-2052 owners manual from the radio shack website.

Also, just curious why are you searching for frequencies all the time...why not just program the scanner with all the local frequencies for your area and leave it on SCAN instead of SEARCH?

Hope this helps!

Does the squelch open up when this happens (do you hear the rushing noise)?

Can you manually set it to a programmed channel when it doesn't scan and hear anything?

Did you do an actual scanner reset, or did you just clear some channels?

It's definitely a thermal problem - something is going wrong when something heats up, but it could be anything, even a bad solder joint.

One thing you might want to check is if the scanner will pick up anything while searching the service banks. Press the SVC button and go the the PUB, POLICE, FIRE/EMG, AIR, and WX banks. This can help nail down if something got jacked up in the programming or if the scanner has gone deaf. I have a 2052 and it is normally trouble free. I've had to do a reset a couple of times in the last few years, but nothing major.

Don't know if you are inclined to open the scanner an try a few test but this is the schematic for the audio section.
1. The ext speaker jack can be checked prior to opening the cabinet. Insert a 1/8th plug in and out a few times to insure the internal parts of the jack are functioning. This is crucial for completing the audio circuit.

Open the cabinet.
2. insure the 11 pin ribbon is firmly seated into its jack on the board.
3. operate the scanner, and when the problem occurs, take a small tool and tap on the Audio Chip (IC 3).
4. with scanner operating, use a non-conductive tool and press at each solder point in and around the chip and trace out to other solder points with the same effort.
5. Insure main speaker is firmly seated in jack. (this was edited in at 2015)
6. take it to a shop

the fix for your problem has been found. Its a bad solder joint in the squelch knob PCB. or a bad squelch pot. thay are cheaply made.

after a tornado, i took mine to work so the guys could hear the bs. it started acting like the squelch was not there for a bit. it got worse over the year. i thought it was the police radio since it would only do it when dispatch would transmit. it just got worse with every day. till finally it stuck on no squelch full time.
