Well, I've attempted to load the 3.8 firmware and have had no success - Error: Wrong firmware for scanner...

The scanner goes successfully into CPU update mode, but the bin file (downloaded from the Facebook link) continually fails to load.

How do I work around that one?

Edit - Well, it looks as if we have to specify WS1080 in settings before attempting to load the file. But it still fails to load with an error that states Disconnecting from COM Port... Not looking too good so far.

Use windows 7 for guaranteed results. It sounds like operator error....AKA: your doing something wrong. GO back to page 12 of this thread and find my step by step instructions.

Yep, I am using Windows 7 to perform the update. Your procedures are basically the identical steps I took. The problem may be related to the bin file I downloaded from Facebook. The scanner goes into CPU update mode, and then issues a message that the bin file isn't for the scanner which causes it to disconnect from the COM Port.

After that I have to reload the 668 bin file because the CPU firmware is erased.

In settings where it says scanner type choose the 668. where it says firmware make sure you choose the 1080

Just in case there's an issue with corruption of the 3.8 firmware file, here are the checksums that you can use to verify it's undamaged - I'm going on the assumption that the one that I was provided is undamaged, so if you've used the 3.8 firmware bin file please verify it against one of these checksums and post whether or not yours matches what I have for mine.

FILENAME: WS1080e_U3.8.bin
FILE SIZE: 358 KB (366,768 bytes)

CRC32: 950D845B
MD5: 721B82451C3C702681ED4E1BFE4BA010
SHA-1: E56BA24C09312F092D229081FFBBDAAD5A917D83
SHA-256: 7FC3FE53D98732860A974B1383D9D58E0063823D7B0D54673175B65ED8994C3C

You can use a tool like HashCheck to verify the checksum(s) - it adds a tab to the right-click Properties dialogue to do checksum verification and is a very handy thing to have around more often than one might be aware of. ;)

That's exactly what mine shows - kinda strange :)

No, that won't work - you have to specify 1088 unless you're restoring the 668 file.

Okay, I got it - my problem was that selecting to first option (688/1088) changed "both" dropdown boxes to the same model. It's loading now.

I'm pretty sure the "scanner type" needs to be the actual HW platform of the scanner...but I could be wrong.

That is correct, scanner type is the scanner model you originally purchased and is in in your hand.

The firmware is what you want the scanner to be after the update, ideally (WS1080) if upgrading.

Yep, the confusing part was that the first dropdown box updated both selections - It's up and running. I just saw my first DMR hit, so it looks like a go for me.

Does anyone know how muskrat39 is doing?

I reckon I am not going to be at home with my family this Christmas. They tell me I have congestive heart failure. They say there is no permanent damage they can find, but I have to get rid of a lot of fluid around my heart. Dr is also changing my Bp medicine. I should get to go home next week. Thank you for the concern an well wishes, and have a merry Christmas, happy Hanukah, or however you celebrate this time of year.

Hey muskrat39. Don't let that diagnosis get you down. My wife's mom lived with that for 30 years. She lived to the ripe old age of 94. You'll have to change your eating habits and lifestyle a little but you'll be ok.I hope you get home and feel better soon.
