Go to starrsoft.com & get the Win 97 software. You get to try it for 30 days free, so make sure it is what you want. It is $30 to purchase but well woth it. Then all you need is the cable from radio shack. Then you can download the stuff you want straight from this web site.

For what it's worth...attached is a PRO-97 Quick Reference Card - (tri-fold, print front and back) It's a little easier to use than going through the manual.

How do you use a computer to program a scanner in layman's terms?

What kind of scanner are you trying to program?

If its a radio shack scanner...
1. Go to radio shack, get the usb cable.
2. Go to www.starrsoft.com and download the program pertaining to your scanner.
3. Go to the database section of this website and look up your local area.
4. Enter the frequencies you desire into the starrsoft program (win95, win96, win97 Etc.).
5. Upload the information from the starrsoft program VIA the usb cable - which should be plugged into the PC/IF port on your scanner. If so equipped. If not equipped then you cannot program your scanner thru your computer.

It appears you are from California...judging by your posts in the past. Here is a link for the California section of the database...click on your county next...

Thanks you for the information.
I have tried that link softstar but it appears to be down. I saw the cable from Radio Shack you are referring to and this would be for a Pro-97 and pro-95. I already have the information of the areas I would like to scan. Trunking also seems to be a difficult thing as I'm used to conventional scanning and programming. Most of the things I listen to aren't trunked but I also need to learn that too.

Yes, the starrsoft site seems to be down, hopefully its just teporary.

For your pro-95 the software will be free. The win97 software you will be able to try it for 30 free, but then it will cost you I think $25 or $30 bucks...its WELL worth the money.

Keep trying starrsoft.com it should be back up soon.

As for programming the trunking frequencies, it is MUCH easier with the software & cable.

Whats the advantage to using the usb cable rather than serial cable?

Well, if your computer will accept a Serial Port, then by all means go for it. USB just seems more "common" for todays computers. It seems to me to be a little faster than serial, also there are two serial port cables available from R.S..

The black one works with some scanners, the grey one works with others. Or is it the other way around ?? (Thats why I prefer USB , it will work with ALL of them.)

Where can I get this info on how to program various trunking freqs. and using a computer to make all of this easier and faster to do programming on trunking systems and conventional systems in layman's terms?
They don't have a book "Programming scanners for dummies"
The last time I programmed a 200, 400 or 1,000 channel trunking/conventional scanner it took me 4 to 6 hours doing it manually and looking between the frequency book and entering it.

The programs from starrsoft.com is pretty self explanitory. Just get to the database section of this website for the area that you want to program and that will give you all the frequencies.

What I usually do when working with this website and the win97/95 software together, I shrink the screens down a little bit so they fit on my monitor side by side...this makes things a little easier.

I will have to look into this. Hopefully it isn't too complicated.

In my humble opinion it is much more complicated to program by hand.

Computer Age!~
It's very time consuming. 4 or more hours.

Oh yeah....at least! If he's anything like me, I have around 8 or 9 hundred freq's in my scanners. Between 8 - 10 buttons to push for each freq (not including text tagging).

800 freq's multiplied by 10 ... you do the math!!! NO THANKS!!! I'd much rather do that on a PC keyboard!

welp... I got the RS USB cable-the latest one-and Windows XP on 3 different computers wouldn't even recognize the damn drivers on the CD.

Then with Win97 I saw that I had to get a USB to serial adapter. I said f**k it and returned the cable and got rid of Win97. Guess I'll have to program mine the hard way.

In this hi-tech era, you shouldn't have to be buying adapters and all that crap. I'll wait 'till someone else gets this worked out.

It's a shame 'cause I love the Pro-97.

I dont use a usb to serial adapter for my win97 program...not sure where you heard you needed that.

Anyway,...did you have the right com port activated?

I never installed the drivers either....just plugged it in and it worked.

Right here: http://www.starrsoft.com/software/win97/default.asp

(text copied here from above page)

System Requirements

In order to run Win97, you'll need the following:

A copy of the Win97 program
A PRO-97 or PRO-2055 Multi-System Trunking Scanner
A programming cable. There are several cables that will work. See this web page for more information.
A Windows (95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP) PC
An available serial ("COM") port. If you don't have a serial port, you will have to use a USB-to-serial adapter. There is some information on those devices on the above "cable" web page.
