I found a list on the internet of frequencies for this area and most of them I cant get in on the scanner, it skips over them. Its a 200 channel, so is this the problem? Im new to this so im not sure what to do, Im trying to get through the manual but they dont tell me what I want to do. I hope someone can help.

Its a radio shack pro-2018 200 channel scanner. It has fire/police, air, marine, ham radio, it also has weather band. What my real question is, is that most of the frquencies I want, the scanner misses them. It has like presets like on your car radio and I can set the frequncy in that and save it but it wont cover them while scanning, like the local police and some state police. You can scan the presets but then you miss out on what you dont have saved. The booklet it came with doesnt help out much on this.

I havent heard anything on the frequencies that is skips when it scans by going there manualy. The Public school system is one it skips so I put that on the preset and when school opens back up I will see if I can get it in. I live in SW michigan and can get lots of things out of chicago, like police and planes. I really appreciate your help

Congrats on getting your new scanner, and welcome to Radio Reference!

One thing to understand is the Pro-2018 is a basic scanner, and one of the things that it does NOT do is trunking - a form of radio communication that is becoming more and more popular everyday. Visit this section for an introduction to trunking. Since you specifically mentioned Michigan State Police, they're using a digital trunked radio system - something that only a handful of scanners will listen to. The scanners that will do digital trunked start at $400 (new) but can sometimes be found a little cheaper in the used market.

Furthermore, the scanner will not allow you to program in any frequency higher than 512MHz, so if you see something you want to listen to that's higher than that, you're out of luck.

If you have questions about specific systems or localities near you, you might find it easier to post a message in the Michigan section here on Radio Reference. If you have questions about programming the scanner itself, and it can't be answered by the owners manual, let us know...we should be able to provide some assistance.

Good luck!

The only Radioshack scanners thast will receive the Michigan State Police are the pro 96 and the pro 2096.

Anybody have any thoughts on why Radioshack Dealers in Michigan don't tell their customers this information before they sell them a scanner?

We program any scanners purchased from us, and any others that people bring in. Our store is family owned and we try to help people even if they don't buy the product from us!

garryd451's question had nothing to do with programing, but about selling a scanner that won't work on MPSCS. You can program scanners that are not digital all day and they will still not work.

We listen to the customer and ask them what they want to listen to before selling them a scanner or any other item fo that matter.
