Radio Shack Through Glass Antenna

A couple of weeks ago I installed the Radio Shack throught the glass antenna. I am happy with the performance so far. The only problem I noticed was that the antenna rod itself would work loose. It never fell off or anything and, it was not a rapid thing.

I did my own little fix and just wanted to leave a note for anyone else with the same problem. I removed the ant. rod and installed an o-ring that fits snug around the set srew that the rod screws onto. This seems to provide a constant pressure as a lock washer would. Plus gives the added bonus of a water tite seal.

Just my fix.....

Does your antenna have a screw with an allen wrench fitting? Mine does and I used a small amount of clear silicon in the hole, Retightened and it stayed!..

lock tight will work also. Thats the blue gunk mechanics use on car repairs

Yes it does. Looks like it might be stainless, I hope.

I thought about that. I was wanting something removable when needed. Plus the fact I still needed to justify the $5 I spent on a 396 pc. o-ring set. LOL

Maybe you can sell the other 395 o-rings for $4.98 :roll: .

How well do those antennas work? I was going to have one installed but my car has aftermarket tint I don't want to cut. I use the Mon. 51 on my other car on a magnetic mount which works great.

In the instructions it say if you have after market tint it must be cut from the area.

I get about the same range as other antennas I have tried. About 25-35 miles good signal.

That's pretty good range. I don't want to cut any holes into tint so I am using a Wilson Y881 Super-Gainer antenna instead.

discussion of antennas

if you know someone who works on window they probably trim out
the on your back glass to install the base for your glass mount for
a little or nothing. i know i had a friend who worked that on mobile
cell phone that i had awhile back. hmmm, i wondered what happened
to him?

i run one on my suburban it's actually the dual band model. i use it on my scanner an old 2067, but in this area of the frozen tundra it's plenty of scanner. but i have it mounted on the pass. side just past the door. i ran a jumper wire from the body underneath the molding to the small ground plane. it works okay as a back up for the ft-8800 when i don't want the super gainer on the roof. and it picks up better than a dual band 1/4 wave by diamond at 1/2 the price. but it really shines as a scanner ant. giving me approx. 60 mi. of coverage. so for the price it was well worth it.

I have decided to skip the glass mount and just stick with the Wilson Y-881 Super-Gainer hand held antenna..
I wonder if the glass mounted antenna will outperform this super-gainer antenna?? as this antenna is inside the car attached to handheld.

RS on-glass antenna

I have the duel-band model on glass and am not that happy with it. I got a magnet mount of similer design from another source and I can tell a real improvement.

I live out away from any metro area and sometimes a small improvement makes a big difference you might not see in a city.

I can certainly attest to this as I also have a Mon. 51 Antenna Specialists antenna on a magnet mount and you can clearly tell the difference between that and the Super-Gainer Antenna.
