This evening I turned on my Pro-96 and while in Scan mode it stopped at 161.76000...wherein I found myself suddenly listening to Latino dance music. I cannot save if this was an AM or FM station, though the scanner was in FM mode.

Having come back to the scanner about an hour ago, the music is gone.

Can anyone shed some light on this? If this was in fact a radio broadcast (extremely crystal clear) this has me stumped as I thought scanners cannot pickup radio stations - period. Why is that, btw?

Thanks,

Lyman

I get an FM feed of a AM radio station on 460.2500

I have no clue.

Must be a feed to a backup tower or something. If you drew a line between the broadcaster's main transmitter 20 miles away, and the big antanna farm on a hill that everyone in the area uses 1 mile away, it would be a line right through me.

161.76 is one of the Broadcast "RPU" or Remote Pick Up channels. It's can be used for sending live broadcast audio from wideband equipment, commonly called a Marti, back to the studio or for sending pre-delay audio out to a remote broadcast site to feed a PA system, IFB cueing or as an emergency studio-transmitter link.

Find out more about Marti gear here: http://www.martielectronics.com/hierarchy/secondary.php?maj=201&sec=210

Can't say I've Heard AnyThing Other Than Ehpd On It

If Your In The Mall Area, So Much Radio Traffic, Anything Is Possible I Guess

The Only RPU I Have Heard Recently Around Here & Not Too Often Is Wtnh, Usually Between 12/1 pm.

true but not true, your explanation is correct, however a scanner CAN receive in both narrow and wide FM, the bcd396t does it, when you activate the "fm radio" service search it searchs in wide fm

That might really be 450.250.

We have several RP channels in use here in that region, some for IFB.

No problem. I know the feeling.

Was tired yesterday, videotaping trains all day (for which the scanner is indespensible). After 41 years of watching trains I should have known better:

I was kneeling on the Eastbound tracks videotaping a train heading Westbound. Very loud, obviously.

Out of the corner of my eye I caught one coming on the Eastbound tracks...never heard it.

I was unaware that I could still move as fast as I did, or that my BP could raise so high so quickly.

Thanks for the information!

161.76 is one of the "RPU" frequencies that are auxiliary services to radio stations. RPU stands for "remote pickup unit", and that is the equipment that many stations have used for 40 years or more to do remote broadcasts from various locations.

This equipment can also be used as a "Studio-Transmitter Link" to get the station's programming to the transmitter site if the normal "STL" is unavailable.

Most broadcast stations have moved their RPU to the UHF band, 450-451 and 455-456 MHZ. But the old VHF frequencies are still good. The most common of thse are:

161.64 161.67 161.70 161.73 161.76 166.25 170.15,

though there are some licensed from 152.87 to 153.35.
