I purchased a used RadioShack Pro-2096 back in October of this year. I was able to program the local police, fire, EMS, and Sheriff, which is on a trunked system. Out of my curiosity, I programmed the frequencies for the Texas Department of Public Safety, without NAC since the unit doesn't support NAC, and the signals come in so clear!!! How is this possible?!

You must be getting good reception of Texas DPS. NAC only tells you that it's digital (which the scanner can decode), the only reason you would need to be able to enter the NAC value is if there are multiple agencies operating off the same frequencies, where you then have to filter out the traffic much like a PL tone.

As for why it comes in so clear, digital is pretty much all or nothing. It's either 100% or 0%. You either hear every word or you hear gibberish.

The NAC is like a CTCSS or a DCS tone On a analog system if several different users are on the same freq each group has a different CTCSS or DCS an can hear the traffic on that group. The NAC is digital format an not a tone. A different NAC for different users on the same freq..

Hope this helps.
