Hello guys, I'm new to trunking and have finished programming in some edacs sites. I am just wondering if there is an actual setting for edacs wide or edacs narrow or is this just something that's done automatically once the frequencies are entered in. I tried searching the forums to see if this was an actual setting but haven't had any luck. I'm attempting to scan a nycomco edacs system in orange/duchess county. I'm aware that some of the systems are broadcast among multiple sites while others are not. The east coast scanning resources page said to make sure the system is programmed as wide

That page is correct. For best results, you'll want to leave it as an EDACS wide system. If you have not succeeded in picking up any traffic from this system, you may try the New York regional page here on RR and see if there's something you're missing as far as the settings go. I have an EDACS system programmed into my Pro-164 and I had left it as an EDACS Wide system and it works just fine. Also, make double sure the channels you programmed are set as mode "ED" in your scanner (You can do this by pressing the "Mode" button while locked on the channel) then when you get all channels set, press Function (Key "F") and Trunk (Key "T") to set your talkgroups. If you're trying to find new talkgroups on this system, leave the bank in "Open" status (indicated by a + while scanning), otherwise, if you just want to hear the talkgroups you program in and nothing else, you can set the bank to "Closed" status by pressing Function+Delay (The delay key is the . above the "PGM" key). If the system is properly tracking you should see a "T" flashing on the screen while you're scanning. I hope this has helped you and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Just a couple of points you may already know.
1. You must use a separate bank for each of the 8 sites.
2. The freqs. MUST be in specific channels, designated by the small numbers in front of each freq. in the database.
3. Note that in site one, channels 8 and 10 must be left empty.

You never use ch 0 in a bank....start with ch 1
The scanner is trunking the system fine, I'm just trying to figure out if there is such a setting in the scanner to make the system edacs wide or edacs narrow, or is it automatically done once the frequencies are entered in.
I have a psr 410 and i listen to NIPSCO witch is our power company it is narrowband and it has to be put as so or it will not work. On the 410 in tune mode if you put in the control it will say whether it is narrow or wide band like EDN OR EDW, but if you pick it up as wideband it must be wideband so you should just leave it as wideband. Like they say if it aint broke dont fix it. LOVE AND BLESSINGS

If he follows the info. I gave him 16 minutes before your post he will never use channel 00.

Ok I'm new and have seen a few times to leave bank 0 empty. Why is this? I have the bus system on it and it seems fine. Just trying to learn all this stuff

I believe the way EDACS works is that you have predefined channels of frequencies. Whenever a talkgroup becomes active, the control channel will show it as being on Channel XX. If you program Channel 1 into 0, and 2 into 1, etc, then you'll be running into an issue where you're not hearing what you want.
An example would be Police is on 04-021 and someone starts talking, the control channel will assign it Channel 1, but you have Channel 2 programmed into Channel 1. So say public works is on 12-051 and starts talking after the Police, it will assign it Channel 2 so instead of hearing the Police, you would hear a bunch of people talking about maintenance and such.
I could be wrong in my whole understanding of EDACS. If someone wants to correct me, feel free.
EDACS and LTR systems both use what is called Logical Channel Numbers (LCN for short). In a nutshell, what that means is the little numbers next to a frequency in your area (01, 02, 03, etc.) MUST coincide with the channel in the bank of your scanner. You certainly can use bank 0 for trunking, just not CHANNEL 0 (or in your case, 000, 100, 200, 300, etc.) So, if your frequency, for example, is 856.1125 and the LCN is 09, you would put that in the 09 channel of your bank. Same applies with the rest of the trunk system. Then, you must make sure the channel mode is set to EDACS (ED) on the display. Then you can use the Bank Open or Closed option to track only TG's you program. With Bank open, you get all talkgroups, but bank closed follows only what YOU program. Make sense?
