Unicomer acquired the world rights which includes Canada and the US to the Radio Shack brand in May from Tai Lopez's Retail eCommerce Ventures. Unknown if they'll bring the brand back to Brick and Mortar, they have stores in Latin America so there is some hope that they will.

Wonder if they'll change their mottos; "You've got questions---we've got cell phones" and "You've got questions---we haven't a clue".

No objections to them coming back, as long as their focus isn't cell phones or overly aggressive commissioned sales people who sit outside chain smoking until someone walks into the door, then they attack them like a pack of starving dogs. I have zero desire to "shop" at a store when they don't give me an opportunity to look and discover what they have for myself, not to mention all while doing it while smelling like they single-handedly put out a tobacco farm fire with a straw and a cup of water. I'd rather shop on Ebay and take the risk of getting counterfeit or non-functional used devices than to deal with the sales people and fear of having 10 more cell phone plans shoved down my throat just because I walked in looking for a 3 feet patch of mini-8 coaxial cable.

This is absolutely incorrect! In the 22 years I spent working part-time for RadioShack, we never attempted to shove cell phone plans down anyone's throat! No! No! No!

Instead, we'd shove those plans up their arse. That way, they never saw it coming.

I was always hoping that Home Depot, or Lowes would buy it,, then they could have a small section of an aisle set aside for hobby kinds of parts and equipment. They already have a lot of the other things that people want for radio hobby stuff..

Thanks

I demand an apology for that remark lol. I worked there while in High School from 1975 to 1976. I was designated the "scanner expert" . Best thing about working there... the boss allowed me order all the scanner crystals I wanted at store cost! At the time that was $1.65, and retail was $4.95. That would be cool if they came back for nostalgia purposes anyway.

Not gonna happen. :)
Some "shacks" were better than others and had an employee, like you, who understood the technology, Unfortunately, your expertise was eclipsed by the all the commission-hungry dullards who would have been better suited as door to door Electrolux salesmen.

Granted, the technology landscape at RS was a lot less diverse in the mid-70's. POTS phones-no cellular, analog over the air TV, analog scanners with few departments having more than 8 channels, no computers, but a tube tester in each store. But even then there was a pretty low bar for many sales folks who didn't know a resistor from a transistor.

All of these LOL remarks come from the fact that no one really missed Radio Shack when they left. Maybe they didn't shove cell phones down a customer's throat but if you wanted anything else, well, they didn't have a clue. What's a PL-259?

The local store near me had about 4 square feet of floor space devoted to parts. The rest of the store had (lots of) cell phones, cell phone cases, and a few other consumer electronics, all of which sold cheaper almost everywhere else. Do I miss them? Not really.

Should be interesting if anything actually happens with this.

Radio Shack did themselves in twice with clueless leadership. Anything new would have to be pretty different from the days of old. I don't see enough of us older types around to actually keep a brick and mortar store that sold parts open for long. Todays throw away society doesn't want to fix things, they want a new one.

Wondering if they are just buying the brand name recognition. Slap the name on Cheap Chinese Crap and sell it to unknowing consumers. Kind of like Tram/Browning.

Is there any box store now days that has numerous aisles with resistors, capacitors, etc? PC Microcenter is the closest I can think of. Even HRO doesn't seem to have a lot of this type of stuff.

Up here in Massachusetts, there’s a place called “you do it electronics“. They had everything connectors, resistors, transistors, project boxes, connectors of all sorts. However, after Covid, one guy who was running, it, retired, and the guy that took it over, is starting to empty the shelves of what he terms “things that do not sell“. The writing is on the wall for this venue as well!

Just don't ask for my name and address every time I buy something!
Oh wait, that happens when you order online.
