I have found (with TAFL, thx J!) cp rails allocations but I never seem to hear them. They operate in our area many times a day (shunting?) but nothing. Anyone have a common freq for them?
Honestly, if you are serious about wanting to listen in on rail, the only resource you need is the Canadian Trackside Guide. It lists every frequency in every subdivision across the country and tells you who uses it and what it is used for.
And there is a hobby shop in Calgary at about the 2500 block of 4 St NW that stocks it (the Trackside Guide). North of the McDonald's and on the opposite side of the street, with a storefront painted like a boxcar IIRC. (It's a model train shop)
I got one for use on my VIA Rail experience across the country - and promptly forgot it at home the day I left.
I am thinking you are in the Airdrie area. so you would be on the red deer sub of the CPR. so the main line standby is 161.475 (CP1), RTC is on 161.325 (CP5). for the most part that is all you need any wayfrights may do there switching on a yard channel.
the red deer sub is CTC to the siding on the south side of Airdrie then OCS to Red deer. In OCS the conductor has to get clearances from the RTC. So you will get that on CP5 and on cp1 the conductor will be calling out all stations and slow orders. in the CTC the RTC controls the switches and the signals so you will just hear the signals being called out on the radio.
If you let me know where you are and what time you see the crew switching and I will find out what there working on for you.
