They are using P25 a format where u can buy replacement radios from anyone---It's Not Like Open Sky where government agencies MUST buy from Ma/Com because no one else is allowed by Ma/Com's patent to build the radios.
Who loses? Taxpayers

brey, can you help me understand why that's a thumbs-down in your opinion, or am I misunderstanding you? To me, using a standards based system like pure P25 is a good idea, especially for the reason you cite - that end users can get any vendor's radios and have them work on the system. My province is going to a P25 system starting next year and one of the plusses is that I don't have to dump my fleet of XTS portables even if the government picks one of the non-Motorola bids. All it'll take is a bit of reprogramming.

Elroy - care to provide me some examples of Raytheon-deployed systems? They are one of the bidders in the above-mentioned system, and it might be eye-opening for me to learn more about them.
