Could the pilot have been transiting from RDU to GSO or vice-versa? There are circumstances where a pilot goes from departure at one airport to approach at another without contacting the ARTCC or going out of radar control. I think that the Airport/Facility Directory for your area might have info on that type of thing.
But if your pilot is doing something dumb, I have a good story from your state. While at an airshow at Seymour Johnson AFB (GSB), I heard a private pilot calling the legs to land about 10mi away at Wayne County Airport on their CTAF. In the other headphone, I could hear the tower at Seymour (where he actually was) trying to call him and get no response whatsoever. He was tuned to CTAF for the puddle-jumper airport, oblivious to the fact that he was circling an Air Force base with a massive crowd on the apron, along with a lot of big airplanes you'd never see at his destination. Fire trucks went out and blocked him on a taxiway, and he was kept in custody until the show was over. Always wanted to know how this might've affected his license.
