The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Noticed you can re-arange the order of your zones by right clicking on the "No." column and selecting move up or move down.

Anyone know how/if its possible to re-arrange your talkgroups in the Group ID settings screen? I have added 200+ TGIDs and have to do a lot of hunting and pecking when creating new zones/knob positions because I can't re-arrange the groups.

Not that I've found... got really hard after manually entering/adding hundreds of talkgroups to the profile to find anything - even if you entered them in order one after the other (which I didn't usually). It would be nice to have either an additional field/column to allow for naming (i.e. adding the system name) to talkgroups and/or the ability to sort and/or filter on them.

I also found it frustrating that if you add a talkgroup to a zone/knob and then removed it, the PPS pushes it to the end of the list of available talkgroups. Just things you have to learn to deal with... but the more groups you have defined, the harder this becomes to work with.

I finally gave up manually entering things and wrote a script to import the data from the RRDB when I want to create new profiles (easier than fighting with one big one).

Also, I've learned that if/when you have a larger number of talkgroups in a profile (even if you aren't using all of them), the radio will begin to "bog down" on busy systems to the point that you lose control of the radio. Now days, I use my script to import only what I want/need vs. loading things up for the "possibility" that I'll need/use them later.

I have over 250 talk groups in my only profile and it has no ill effects on the radio's operation.

The next time you open PPS that talk group will have returned to its original position.

Yup - well aware of that ... but that wasn't what I was talking about.

250 isn't "alot"... try 1,000 or more and then monitor a subset of talkgroups on a busy system like Philly PA for a while... the radio loses it's mind...

I will admit that I've "pressed the limits" (obviously beyond) of what the G4/G5 are designed to do. I've programmed many systems into a single profile with different zones and knobs for them to monitor as I travel. For the most part, if you don't overload the profile and radio and limit yourself to just what you will probably monitor, it does fairly well. What surprises me, however, is the fact that the PPS will let you do it and then essentially cause the radio to go off the deep end.
