Re: PSR-500/600 vs. PSR-500/600 C

Does anyone know if there are any differences between the "PSR-500 & PSR-600" United States units and the "PSR-500 C & PSR-600 C" Canadian units???

The reason I am asking this is because I am finding that allot of the units listed on eBay are of the Canadian flavor and are right around $60 cheaper than the United States versions.

I assume that the Canadian versions would not be type accepted but I am looking for other differences with regards to coverage, firmware, etc.

Thanks,

One thing to keep in mind is that GRE-America will not service the Canadian versions so if you experience a problem, you would have to have it serviced in Canada. As far as I know both are US Cellular blocked so there is no advantage there. Craig

There are some subtle differences.

On the Canadian versions of the PSR500:

- "V folders" are called "Eh Folders"
- The opening screen message is "Vive Le Quebec!"
- Instead of an AC power supply, you get a mini-kerosene generator
- The programming software only works on the Commodore 64
- The scanner comes pre-programmed with all of the Labatts and Molson delivery truck frequencies
- The buttons are twice as large (because it's hard to find them after a 12-pack)
- There are only three scan lists (because it's hard to count after a 12-pack)
- The case material is made of dead baby seal skin
- The antenna connector is designed to handle both BNC and antlers
- "Signal Stalker" is called "Neighbor Stalker."
- There are only three LED colors: Amber, Pilsner, Lager

Alright folks it was funny for about all of a minute. Thank you to the folks from GRE who are monitoring this foirum and fo sharing this information...

It is in fact true that these units are NOT supported by GRE America and are also being illegally sold here in the U.S. by a seller on eBay for $459 out of Trevose, PA.

I have discussed this issue with ther folks at GRE as well as the U.S. Customs Department and the local BBB. I have opened a case with PayPal and eBay regarding these units as I am attempting to get a refund for these two scanners (PSR-500 C & PSR-600 C) which I just purchased under the description that they were in fact U.S.A. models. Nowhere in the sellers ad, photos, etc. did he mention that these were "C" models from Canada... Buyers beware, in fact it might just be easier to purchase directly from GRE as they now have an online store...

Thank you all for your comments...

Regards,

Jerry - W2GLD

I am familiar with the differences between the units. Mainly, there are three: the Canadian model will not accept the U.S. firmware upgrades, the Canadian model has V-folders that are set for systems in Canada, and the Canadian distributor (Lectron) is the only source of product support for the Canadian models. Operationally, including frequency allocations and step sizes, they appear identical. If you are in the U.S, you are wise to return them. You might also want to contact Lectron about this fellow selling them here. Perhaps they will stop selling to him.

???

I also have one of these 600"C" and wanted to add to this. I am wondering about the warranty issue because the sealed paperwork items included a warranty card addressed and issued by GRE of America. I also went online and registered at GRE America and it accepted the registration.
I'm wondering about the firmware issue. I can't find a GRE Canada and GREAmerica only lists one firmware for the 500/600 and wasn't able to locate any other firmware for it.

Update!

I wanted to update this thread with the following information.
I was also a buyer of a PSR-600 on Ebay from Gary Brodbeck = Onlinesbestdeal / Jade Electronics of Feasterville-Trevose, Pennsylvania (Grecom distributer). I saw this thread this morning and contacted him about it. He called me just a while ago on the cellphone and said he had bought a batch of these and wasn't aware of the previously mentioned warranty and other issues with the C model. He called GRE this morning and confirmed these issues.and is sending them back.
He is sending me a new American 600 in 10 days or so when he receives a new batch and with a return label for the unit I have now and told me to enjoy it till I get the new one.
Gary had my cellphone# because originally I bought a 400 from him and he didn't realize he had none in stock at the time, called my wife and apologized up and down to her before getting my number and doing the same to me. He offered a partial refund for my inconvenience for waiting for the 400 unit to come in or I had the choice of a good deal on a upgrade to a 600.
I paid him the difference for the 600 Saturday nite and the scanner was sitting on my doorstep Tuesday morning. I live in CT.
He also told me he is trying to straighten out all other customers with this issue.
I've been around the block a few times on Ebay and I don't think I've ever come across a more caring seller than Gary and wanted to add this and hope anyone with these issues will contact him.
My name is Doug and this is quite some scanning forum you have here!

Agreed! I got mine for a bit less than that, while the dollar was at par :)
I should have grabbed a 500 too while I was at it.

Again it seems like the best price is at HRO, where you can buy it online or in the store for $449. I picked one up a month or so ago and love it.

Canadian V-Folders

Just wondering if anyone would have a copy of the V-Folders that come installed in the Canadian version of the GRE 500/600? I contacted LECTRON and they say it is a factory installed file and therefore do not have a copy of it. Just wondered if anyone that may have purchased one of these units would have a copy.

Thanks.
