Is there a local [Maricopa County] REACT group that assists MCSO with traffic control? Do they provide other assistance? If there are one or two affirmative responses, does anyone know what frequency(ies) they use when they're assisting?

REACT

Yes, REACT is a Maricopa County team that mostly assists with traffic control, and they are available for other communities. It is not related to the old React teams on the CBs back in the 70s.

I assume they are on the County trunked radio system, although I don't have a talk group associated with them that I could find.

MCDOT's REACT units assist MCSO, local PD's as well as FD's with road closures after an accident as well as other incidents that require long-term restrictions or closures. I have never heard them on the MCDOT talkgroups on the Maricopa County trunked system. Or, at the very least, they don't ID as "REACT".
I have heard them ID as REACT on ADOT's ALERT West and ALERT East talkgroups on the YRCS when they were working together on an incident.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies, guys. Given my vintage, I was recalling the citizens-with-radios REACT groups from the '70s. I heard on-scene units at some apparently major incident west of me call for REACT to close intersections yesterday.

I thought maybe you were thinking of the old CB React group. Apparently they're still around, although I haven't heard or thought about them in 30 years or so. It looks like there's still a team in Mesa.

Pre-dawn this morning, a road closure was being worked on TG 912 on the Maricopa County trunked system. I don't know if this is in fact MCDOT REACT, but it may be worth listening to, in order to determine who it is.

They are using talkgroup 912 on the Maricopa County System. They are active today.

Awesome! I just heard MCSO talking about them, so I went to the wildcard, and that was the first TG that popped up :)

Citizens Emergency Response Teams (CERT) were first organized by the Los Angeles (City) Fire Department and assist law enforcement, fire and EMS agencies in many areas of the country. The number of teams organized is increasing and areas without such teams are getting smaller. I was a member of a CERT team in the town I live in and we were sponsored by the police department, but the fire department and county paramedics were on the board that oversaw us. We received training by all three departments. We helped with traffic control at major events and parades, blocked streets during major fires and were trained to triage at multi causality incidents. We were trained to assist in the hasty search stage of SAR's. I loved being on the team and it was a real loss when I had to quit due to health reasons. We had no wannabes or law enforcement groupies on our team. Everyone was professional and wanted to serve the community.

Some of the teams have large memberships and have communications organizations that are complex. There is a national CERT team website and following links to the L.A. City and L.A. Country teams. You can read about how a large team is organized and equipped. It is a far cry from those CB react teams in the 60's and 70's.

IIRC, Glendale (AZ) FD has or had a CERT. I don't know if they still do.

Anyway, in this case, REACT is a group of traffic control specialists from the Maricopa County DOT, who assist munincipalities with extended road closures due to PD/FD/EMS incidents, especially after hours when the city's traffic department employees may not be available. This helps free up local PD's from having to be assigned to it.

I've even heard them working alongside ADOT's ALERT members, when a freeway/highway has to be closed, and they want traffic to follow a specific route along surface streets back to the freeway. MCDOT REACT has the capability to use ALERT's talkgroups on the YRCS, in addition to their own TG('s) on the Maricopa County trunked system.

And, I believe they both also have access to at least the VHF interoperability channels for on scene comms. I've heard at least once an ALERT unit tell another to go to car-to-car, and they didn't pop up on another YRCS TG, and after the flooding isses we had last Spetember when a TS came up through AZ, I heard two ADOT units who were checking the Agua Fria 101 freeway underpasses for flooding come up on one of the VTAC's. (The 101 is less than 200 yards out my back door.)
