I believe that position is the last digit of the year of production (which so far would be 3, 4, or 5). The 6's should be starting to come out soon, but they may have lots left from the last run, so it might be a while until we see 6's.

The last 4 of the ser# is not the what you are looking for from what I have read is 48 is 2014 and 58 is 2015 but this could be wrong also.
have we heard from any ops who have a new one with the fix? i mean, do they really exist? i also read somewhere the serial # is on the radio and NOT the box, so u cant tell without buying on and opening it. u would think uniden could at least place a sticker on the outside of the box saying something like NEW STOCK or THIS IS ONE WE FIXED THAT IS NOT BROKEN RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. lol

I just received two 436HPs back from Uniden with the "fix" and new screen color. The clock works fine. More importantly, I have my best handheld scanners back in terms of overall performance here in So. Calif. While they were gone for about 3 weeks, I picked up a third 436HP from someone at a great price. I'm sure it may eventually require the "fix" but its also working great.
Do I like the 436HPs? The answer is above.

we just cant tell.my large wholesaler recently received more 436 but so far they dont seem to have new display scanner.I wished they did,but all dealers are right we just cant tell.

Hi.. just getting back here.. I talked with ScannerMaster on Monday and they said they could not identify from their stock if they had the 436 with the fix.. they had no way of knowing.. however they were aware of it.
Since I have done a lot of business with HRO over the years, I called their PDX store and asked them the same question.. they said they just got a new shipment in and if I bought one, and it did't have the FIX, I could return it with no problem.. So on Thursday I'm headed to PDX (only 78 miles) to pick one up.. I will let you know.. I really want that radio, only if it's the FIX.. LOL..

Hi.. Did the new screen color make it easier to see? is it brighter?
Thanks in advance,
Doug

That is sort of a personal matter, my feeling is the new backlight color makes the screen easier on the eyes, but probably a little less contrast so overall it is a wash. Remember here we are just talking about shades of white, sort of like the difference between a warm white and cool white light bulb.

How do you like the new color of the display? Do you think it is an improvement over the old screen?
I usually have the light on all of the time when listening to the scanner. It is OK but it could be better.
To bad Uniden did not make a color screen for the 436 like the Home Patrols have.

Frankly, I like the old color better, but then you had the dimming problem. Wait, we think we're alright now, but let's see what happens over several months or a year's time with the new color/LEDs. Regardless, the 436HP is the best handheld scanner I have owned in terms of flexible programming, which is a must here in Los Angeles.
To be fair, I wish the screen were as bright as say the WS1080 or even a color screen like the HP-1/2, but it is what it is. And it (the 436HP) is great scanner. If you look through all the threads on RRDB, you see more and more folks "pulling the trigger" in buying the 436HP. I wouldn't worry so much about whether you are going to get a new model without all the problems.
1) We don't really know if there will be problems down the line.
2) Uniden has demonstrated that they stand behind their scanners and repair/modify them as needed.
3) The 436HP is a excellent scanner, especially for P25 decoding and trunk scannin

I like the old color better, but all the pics I've seen show that the new design is easier to read.

That said, I'm fine with the new color - I just like the older one better.
