Realistic DX-302 Not Working. Help?

I received a Realistic DX-302 the other day and had to wait for appropriate antenna connections to arrive before I could try it out. Well buggers. It doesn't seem to be working, despite my best attempts. I've read the manual thoroughly. I've tried multiple antennas and both connections on the back but nothing, nada, zippo... The signal strength meter is lit, but does nothing. I'm reluctant to send it back for a refund request until I try other things that perhaps anyone here might suggest. TIA.

I purchased a Realistic DX-302 that I think has some great potential. Cosmetically, it's almost flawless but I think it's needs a caring hand to go through it. Can I get some recommendations for someone or somewhere that can 1) install new capacitors (I see they make kits for this) and 2) possibly repair the signal strength meter, and 3) check both antenna connections for viability. I don't have skills to do this myself and I'm not aware of anyone nearby. I'm happy to ship the radio if I need to. Thank you!

Go to the SWLingPost website, devoted to shortwave listening and where some folks have had their radios restored. You might find a restorer there.

On Ebay

I once owned the DX 302 years back - Ill say if its running no need to change the capacitors out yet - the meter could possibly be replaced
with a Cb radio equivelent like the Galaxy Saturn Meter

As for Servicing - Could not help you there.

This is a wadley loop type reciever- the pre select needs to be set on the frequency then turn the outer silver ring to the frequency desired
you may have to wiggle it a little to center it on the frequency Turn the RF gain up and set the Attenuation to 0 ( switch).
If you do not have the numbers change with the Black dial the Frequncy reading could be bad if so the Radio has an issue in the RF
generation and receiving .

A long piece of wire for an antenna should get you somthing.

Please do not start two threads with basically the same question. That's known as cross-posting which is not allowed in RadioReference forums.

The OP's two threads have been merged.

If you can get the top or back off the radio, spray the tuner cap and the Megahertz cap with canned air.. I had to do this with my Yaesu FRG-7 to get it working (after several years' storage). Otherwise, I was hearing basically nothing.

Also, don't forget to exercise the band or mode switch. My FRG-7 needed that, also. If the 302 has a preselector control, spray that tuner cap with canned air also.

As the other poster above says, you have to center the MHz dial on the MHz you're tuning, if it's off a bit, it lessens the signal strength considerably.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give all of that a go.

Did you get this figured out? I have one that does exactly the same thing. Everything lights up, antenna connected, properly set, yet no signal on any freq.

Yes and no. First, I haven't messed with it much however I did learn that it's sensitve to making sure the bands are selected correctly before tuning. Overall, I think it will work fine, but like I said, I haven't been using it much. Other things going on right now.

Have you got your head around tuning a 'Wadley Loop" receiver - you need three hands! Start off roughly tuning the preselector, then the MHz selector then the kHz dial. Turn the AF gain up until you hear the background noise (and the RF gain? I don't know if the 302 has one) Now peak the preselector and the MHz selector and the kHz selector. Try it first on a BC band station. It's not easy but you get good results once you get the hang of it. I don't have a 302, but I do have an FRG7 and I have used a Racal RA17 which has way more knobs to get wrong!

and if you want complicated, try this......

Thanks! It's been a little while since I played around with it. I cleaned out the basement rec room (think "hoarders") and changed it back to my room, and that took a fews weeks. The 302 is behind me on the shelf, but I'm due to mess around with it. I've been playing with the Tecsun H-501x and having fun with various antennas in the basement. The MLA-30+ seems to do well. I sold the Eton Elite 750 and want to get the Tecsun S-2000 to replace it. In the meantime, I have a ton of other things to take care of before spring warms things up.
