realistic pro 2004 vintage scanner how to use ?

Im use to having a handheld.Anywase just got a realistic pro 2004 - i know its old but it works thought id give it a try!
Anyway got the instructions read them , reaf them and read them again .
Dont know whether im just thick or beacuase im use to hand helds ? but cant work it out.
My other scanner i programed channels in and could scan bands .I 's press a button for example and scan 26 - 39.The next buttotton id press would go up these wee all preset bands you could not change.
Anyway this scanner how do i do this? If anyones got one or had one can they help.Its no god refering me to the internet manuals on google ive read them and am still having probs.
The scanner works as ive picked some stuff up.I basically want to know how do i scan pre set bands so i know im scanning to pick up new signals eg bands 25 - whatever - which buttons do i press..
Not sure if the person i bought it off has cleared their memory on it etc.
Any tips on pro 2004 welcome

Hi TB, The 2004 does not have the "service search" - or, pre-defined limits search - feature. You must enter lower and upper frequency limits for any search. And, btw, a search must remain within a "band;" i.e., "VHF-Low," or "VHF-High," etc.

.... there are 10 search banks that YOU can program as you see fit. To access the search banks, press "program+ ^ or V" (up or down keys below "limit" key. From there you can press the 0-9 keys to select which search bank you want to use.

To program a search bank:
After you've selected a search bank, press "program+limit". You'll see "L (search bank #)" followed by a freq. Enter the low freq for that bank, then enter. Press "limit" key again ("L" replaced by "H") then the high freq you want for that bank, then enter. Be sure to change mode from "NFM" to the correct mode if necessary. When finished, press either the "^" or "V" key to start searching.

Problem is these have been changed i will have reprogramme .How do i work out vhf low and high etc

On a side note, that is one fine scanner. I have spent time with one and find that it is a high quality unit, worth hanging on to. They don't make scanners like that anymore (Japanese made).

I don't think it has anything to do with how to "work out vhf low and high." Just program the scanner and pay attention to what bank you are entering your frequencies into. For instance, say you put the frequencies of your town into Bank 1. Then you put a neighboring town's frequencies into Bank 2, and so on.

Then if you only want to listen to your town, you can turn the other banks off so you will only be scanning Bank 1. Thats how it works. I've got my town in Bank 1, neighboring cities in Banks 2 and 3, Coast Guard in Bank 4, airports in Bank 5, freqs that I'm researching in Bank 6, etc. You can set up your scanner any way you want to. But if you give some thought to it beforehand, you can group frequencies of seperate agencies in different banks so you can lock some of them out and only listen to a select few, if you want to. You also should be able to lock out specific frequencies, too. You really need to read the manual, it should all be in there.

I don't have a Pro 2004, but I've owned quite a few Radio Shack scanners and working with the older ones seems pretty standard to me by now. To program in frequencies, try entering in the channel you want the frequency to go in, then press "Manual" and it will take you there. Press "Program" (or "Prog"), key in in the frequency numbers, then press "Enter." You're done. Press Manual again to go to the next channel and repeat. If you just want to erase the frequency already in place, try pressing "Program" and then key in a zero, then press "Enter." That should erase it. Has to be done for every individual channel that you want to erase, if the Pro 2004 works like the old RS's that I have.

I don't recall, is the Pro 2004 a trunking scanner? That can complicate things. Try going to a Radio Shack store if you can't figure it out after studying the manual. Good luck.

For non-trunked analog scanning, the 2004 2005 2006 are very hard to beat.
I have a 2004 and a 2006, and will likely never part with them.

True that! Any of those scanners can be your buddy even when you're monitoring a trunked system. I just did the discriminator tap mod on my 2006 and now I've got it working great with unitrunker, sitting side by side with my PSR-500 while I monitor my local P25 system.

I agree wholeheartedly. I had the 2004/2005/2006 before. And the 2004 is one solid scanner. Nice and heavy, great metal case with great shielding of the internals. Definitely this is my all-time favorite scanner in terms of ease of use and functionality. Wish they still made them like this.

I have one of these too but am having problems programming it. I've followed the directions in the manual, but it seems like the decimal point/period key is bad.

Just thought I would check in with you all here and see if there is anything special I need to do or if it is a finicky button, or maybe it's just plain bad.

Does anyone have any input?

They will pry my 2004 from my cold dead hands. The release of the 2004 was delayed. RS was claiming they were selling secure phones, and selling a receiver capable of monitoring them. the radio's were modified not to pick up cell frequencies. Took about 2 minutes to mod the 2004 to have NO holes in it's coverage. Also a simple mod to add 100 channels. Been running it since the day they were released.

10 scan banks channels 1 to 300 or 400 if modified so bank 1 is ch 1 to ch 30 or 40 bank 2 from 31 or 41 to 60 or 80 . to tell the difference hit PROGRAM 400 PROGRAM if it says error on the right side it is a 300 channel scanner.
10 search bands that you set, anything like 25 to 1300 will take some time.
you can only search one band at a time and you know which one by the number on the screen
so if you wanted to search all the ham bands you could set
1 for 50 to 54
2 for 144 to 148
3 for 222 to 225
4 for 430 to 450
5 for 902 to 928
6 for 1240 to 1300
the only but is that when it hits the high freq it will only start again on the same band you can not connect them. so when it hits 54 you would press the number 2 and it would start at 144, you can jump bands at any time.so if it was on 51 and you wanted to go to 144 you just hit 2
the ham bands are just for reference you can set up anything you wany

I have only one problem with the 2004,5,6,2035,2042 etc. scanners of that era, no pl / dpl tones. When used with an external antenna in a heavy rf area and you have more than one agency sharing the same frequency, it becomes a real pain in the rear to monitor one agency and not the other. Better yet, when there is an incident taking place and the agency you want to hear is overpowered by the "other" agency using the same frequency, it gets frustrating. I love my Pro-2006, but for anything other than mil-air or civil air monitoring, it's just not worth the headache. I loved the slanted front face of the 2004 and the metal body, They really just don't make scanners like that anymore.
