I would like to purchase a plug to go into the external antenna socket on the Tecsun PL-880 so that I could experiment with different external antennas without cutting the plug off the external antenna that comes with the radio.

What exactly do I need to look for?

Are you referring to the 3.5mm plug that is included on the supplied external wire antenna?
If so, you can buy adapters with a variety of combination 3.5mm male plug to different type of connectors. Many with cable between connectors.
Check online , goggle 3.5mm plug adapters, adapter cables.
Hope this helps.

Make sure it visually matches the plug that came with the PL880. ( Type TS, tip and sleeve)

Did you see the recent thread on the PL-6xx antenna jack? I am presuming that the jack is the same, and the info might be useful to your situation.

I used to have an adapter with a male 3.5mm plug, and mounted directly on the back of it, with no leads, was an SO-239 female coax connector. I used that with a Sony 2010 back in the 90s. The stiffness of the coax cable may have put a strain on the radio's antenna jack, but it survived. I've misplaced the adapter since then, but I'm pretty sure I bought it at Radio Shack. Maybe they still carry it.

My ATS-909X has four 3.5mm jacks (antenna, auxiliary input, line out and headphones). They're all on the left side panel, so I often connect things to the wrong jack by mistake. Kind of frustrating, because sometimes I wonder why I can't hear anything in the headphones.
