Where do you live and what system are you looking to monitor?
I live in western NC in the foothills. Was interested in having a kinda all in one mobile system that could also work as a police scanner but also could transmit on normal ham frequencies.

What county? The 325p2 is digital, and will do analog. It doesn't DMR w/o paid activation upgrade. If the county is P25, the DMR radio can't be upgraded to P25. You would be better off getting the 325p2 outright, and getting the DMR upgrade.

Welcome to the RR forums. Can you at least give us your county & specific agencies you're interested in monitoring so we can get eyes on the database to see who is operating where & to rule out potential pitfalls (encryption, simulcast distortion, others) which may hinder your scanning efforts. I don't like making "blind" recommendations.

This is an amateur radio transceiver. I have the previous gen and although it's a superb DMR conventional receiver it won't do what you're looking to do as far as P25 Phase-I & II. Doesn't trunk track either.

There is no radio that will only scan one band and allow you to transmit on another. While you may find professional (expensive) radios that will receive P25 Phase 1 or 2, you would also be able to transmit on the same frequencies as well as on the ham bands. Though they can be programmed to prevent transmissions with software that most common hams don't have, if it is not programmed correctly you may be causing interference on the public safety channels. The cost of such a radio is in the thousands of dollars, plus hundreds more for programming software.

Stick with a scanner and a ham radio.

i agree with Whiskey3JMC, two radios.
as you might find some folks that are into scanner also and then you can talk AND listen at the same time.
i knew a bunch of guys in Bergen County New Jersey years ago that were all over the spectrum.
CB, GMRS, 11 meter, ham and a business freq as they were closed most of the time.
and we all listen to the county and local cops and would talk about what was going on.

Thanks I do have those programmed in the UV-5RX3 I have and listen in along with 162.450 NOAA.
Let us know which scanner you buy. I already have an Excel file with the Burke County talkgroups on the VIPER system. I will be able to help with the programming.

The Unication pagers are excellent for decoding simulcast sites but do have limitations. The G4 is for 700/800 MHz only. The G5 covers UHF/700/800 OR VHF/700/800. There are several UHF models depending on the frequency range. The pagers can scan only one system and one site at a time. There is a maximum of 64 talkgroups per knob position. Talkgroups and conventional frequencies cannot be mixed on a knob position. If you plan on scanning multiple counties or sites simultaneously or mixing a trunked system and conventional frequencies, a scanner is much more versatile.
