Knowing exactly whether you intend to transmit will get you more qualified recommendations. Is it safe to assume that as a ham you will transmit?

No, I am mainly interested in monitoring, not transmitting, but I would open to using a transceiver to do that. I understand that many SWLs are using, for example, Icom 7300s for listening.

I think? today most Ham transceivers have General coverage so any will work for HF SWLing...
I use my Icom 7610 for all my Longwave, SW receiving and my Icom R8600 receiver for VHF/UHF
monitoring the Icom 7610 with the Icom Rc-28 remote tuning vfo is awesome for tuning around..
and I use the 7610 hooked to a Wavecom 4050 for Digital signals (obsolete now but still some use)

WebSDR, Receiverbook.de, and SDR Console (using V3 Server) are other options until you get your hardware & antenna(s) set-up to your liking.

If your just starting out, suggest you not spend a bunch of money on a receiver/transceiver. See if monitoring HF is for you. Plenty of options out there. Had a Icom R8600. Great receiver. Didn't use it much so sold it. Prefer my handhelds. Did have a icom ic705 for a HF receiver. Great receiver. Regret selling it. Never transmitted on it. The last two radios in my signature are my HF receivers. Work great. Besides a good radio, you need a good antenna or your listening will not be as good as it should be. I am using a long wire and a little loop attached to my window. Good luck.
