I have a Whistler 1040, I just bought. When I connect the 1040 to a Discone antenna it will not receive the same frequencies I have on the base radio with the same discone antenna. Are the base radios receivers more sensitive than a hand held? Or is there something wrong with the whistler 1040? The frequency is is programed correctly.

In order to better respond to this you'd need to share the base scanner make/model, and what system you are trying to receive. Different scanners will respond differently, it also depends on if you are scanning or holding on the frequency/control channel.

Not saying this is what is happening to you, but I have noticed that hooking a hand-held radio to a good base station antenna can sometimes actually put too much signal into the radio, causing the radio to appear to not work. You can try using the built in attenuator (ATT) and see if that helps.

Thanks for your response. I am new. I built a Aircraft Receiver Kit in 2011 from Ramsey Electronics Model AR2. They are no longer in business. I like building kits. The AR2 is my base radio for aircraft. I have the same aircraft frequencies programed in the base unit and the Whistler 1040. They are frequencies close to my area and I pick up aircraft but seldom the tower.
I tried both scanning and hold no reception. The Ramsey kit will receive the signal with just the telescope antenna out in the open but not so much inside. Location sometimes determines how well it works.
I sometimes see a strong signal flash quickly on the 1040 but no sound. The two comments were helpful. Food for thought. I did not realize too much signal sometimes can be bad. I like the 1040 and after getting the hang on programing I think it is a great radio. I am more from the era of vacuum tubes and select the band and tune in the frequency. Thanks for your input. Jim.

Is aircraft mode set to AM? Is this the system you want to monitor in addition to the aircraft? Polk, Hardee, Highlands, DeSoto Counties Public Safety Trunking System, Regional, Florida - Scanner Frequencies (radioreference.com) Are you using programming software?
I had the modulation set to auto and the selected to AM and no change. I hand programed the frequencies I wanted and that were close by so I could pick up those signals. I put scan list One for ham and scan List two for aircraft.
Should I use programing software? I am very unfamiliar with software programing. Thanks for your help. Jim.

Programming software is so much faster and easier. There are 3 software packages for the 1040: ARC500, Win500, and PSREdit500. There have been problems with people getting keys for Win500. All three offer a free trial period. I prefer Butel ARC500. ARC500 Basic is all you need for programming. The Pro version provides logging functions. With software, you can enter from your computer keyboard without going into the scanner menus. Everything you enter is displayed on the computer screen so that you can readily see what has been done. If you are a premium subscriber of Radio Reference, which I see you are,, you can download programming directly from the database.

Ok. Thanks for the info. Now that I have done some programing I see the software packages make it easier.

I am using ARC500. I am having a slight problem. When I program a set of frequencies from radio reference for list 1 and up load to the radio it works fine. However, when I upload another set of frequencies for list 2 I lose the frequencies in list one. I selected what list to use in the program.

When you upload to the scanner, it overwrites and replaces all 20 scan lists. You have to add to the existing file before you upload to the scanner.

Not sure how that is done.

You need to read from the scanner first, then add your new stuff, then write to the scanner. If you save a copy of the file (which you should!) then you can just add to that file and write it to the scanner.

Ok. I have problems working with files. I have two files saved. After I read the scanner first how do I add another file? When I select open to get another file in the ARC500 I lose the file that came from the scanner. As you can see I am confused.

You cannot load a file into the scanner, then download a second one without erasing the first one.

Combine the two files into one. Everything you are trying to monitor has to be in a single file.
