I have had some bad experiences with receiving RICON project 25 in the newport area. I have tried
pro-2096 as a matter of fact several different units to no avail. I was told that the newport talk group
DEC 1300 NPEVNT1 is digital. I have had radio shack program 3 units and could not receive any transmition which was readable. I was told their is a digital channal. If any one in the area surrounding newport and have received the any of the site 101, 102 and 103 referenced in the R&R.com freq charts please let me know. I would like to know what scanner and how far you are from the tower. I am only 8 miles from the site 102 transmitter and live in newport. I have read that the pro-197 is a good scanners but ould like to know if it will work in the area.

I'm here a lot
You know Jim a good portion of those talkgroups listed in the database are encrypted, so the scanner will ignore them. :(

I see that you quoted DEC talkgroup 1300 as NPEVNT.
1300 is actually DISP and could be monitored, however NPEVNT is 1301 and encrypted and unmonitorable. :(

The tg's listed as D should be good though. :)

Receiving Newport PD

I'm in the north end of the city about 7 miles or so from the 102 tower site. Newport does most of thier dispatching on the Main dispatch channel (1300 tgp) just as they did when they were on 155.7300. There are times when the radio traffic is less than desired, usually it is when a car is in the Old Fort Road / Ocean Dr area., but from what I understand even thier Dispatch has problems once and awhile hearing a car or portable.

It takes a bit of fine tuning and determining the optimal placement for the 197 in order to get the best signal, but once you have it set you'll see the 197 does a decent job. I would also recommend that you continue to monitor Newport's old frequencies as well. I have heard a car/officer calling the station on the old channels when the digital radio fails and the Zoning Officer is still dispatched on the old freq's. for noise complaints.

Your master site
Moved to the Rhode Island forum. Please remember to take a moment and look over all forums along with the Sticky at the top of the Gen Scan forum if thinking a post should go there. Thanks.

Jim,

I don't think Radio Shack personel would know everything about the 2096. If programed right it will receive RISCON and the Newport PD TG 1300. I think when programing the 2096 you have to manually set the scanner to P-25 Trunking for that control channel. You need WIN96 software to program it the easy way. The RS 197 is a newer model but it will cost more $$ and they also program with WIN 500.

You can try to adjust the multi-site setting on the scanner to help with the Newport PD. Try the STAT setting and the ROAM setting For your RISCON system I suggest using Multisite Roam with 92-95% for Threshold High, and 82-86% for Threshold Low.
