You'll get a lot of different opinions. Eneloops are the best IMO. Get a good charger too, don't charge the batts in the HP-1.

Maha makes good chargers.

Good luck.

If you run your scanner on batteries a lot then you really don't need eneloops. Eneloops major advantage is their low self-discharge rate. That makes them ideal for intermittent use such as cameras or remote controls. But one of their drawbacks is a lower maximum discharge current capacity. If you use your batteries a lot and have to recharge them frequently then standard Ni-MH cells might be a better choice if you can get them for less money. There isn't anything wrong with using enloops in a scanner, they won't hurt the scanner and their use won't hurt the cells.

Whooey is right, don't use the scanner to recharge your battery. Get a second set of cells and charge them outside the scanner. Don't let a bad $2 cell ruin a $400 scanner. Get a top-flight charger like the Maha, something that monitors the state of charge and adjusts the charging time accordingly. You'll get better cell life and longer run times between charges.

I vote on Sanyo Eneloops best rechargeable batteries ever! I use them on Apple Magic Mouse, my flashlight and whatever my mom and dad needs the batteries for.

Thanks all for the input.. now ISO a battery charger..
BTW, I read somewhere else that you should not leave the batteries in the scanner if you plan on using the AC adapter which is what I mostly do and rarely unplug the unit.

Yes, No, Maybe. It depends. Some scanners let you turn off charging, either through a menu item, a switch or a different battery holder. If your scanner won't let you disable charging then you should take the cells out of the scanner if you will be using it powered by an AC adapter. Your manual should tell you how to disable charging.

If batteries are not installed in the HP-1, all recording features are disabled, as well as any other feature that could result in a write to the SD card. It is recommended to always have batteries installed if you plan to use any of these features.
