Hey guys just wondering if anyone happens to know of any mods or adjustments for a bc 796 for the receiver. I have had mine about 1 week now in my truck and all i listen to is 800 so i have a 800 gain antenna mounted on my roof, but the problem is it doiesnt pick up that well cause my 800 portable will pick up better than my scnner inside my vehicle, and also when i get into the downtown area i should recieve good but its real broken up and my signal strength will show full bars. just wondering if some one could help. Thanks for your time.

Your problem is caused by overload from Nextel/cell phone antenna sites. You need to cut down on your antenna gain. I'll bet if you try the following you will hear your trunked system well.
1) Get away from the downtown area.
2) Disconnect the antenna when you're downtown.

you want to hear some specific 800 MHz signals, but the problem comes from you are picking up all kinds of signals. So now you have to eliminate the bad signals. That is why attenuation button was put on your scanner to help you do that. I know you think you need a super antenna, but what you are describing indicates that it is too good. As was suggested when you get downtown disconnect the antenna, but I prefer to find a minimum antenna that picks up what I want to listen to. I bought an 800 antenna for my handheld, used it once and put it in the drawer. I have used only VHF/UHF combined antennas on 800 ever since and I am very happy with them. On my two vehciles I use the smallest vhf/uhf antennas I could find.

I live about 15 miles from San Antonio. When I first got my Pro96 SAPD was on a motorola 800 MHz system. I could pick them up outside my house with no antenna. Sadly since then they have gone to a Provoice so no scanner can pick them up.
