Recommend a 800Mhz Base Antenna

Can someone recommend a good 800Mhz base antenna? Im not looking for any kind of a beam since the two towers I am wanting to hit are in opposite directions. I already have a scantenna but its just not cutting the mustered for what I want. I also do not want to spend a fortune on it with the holidays upon us.

Well, in absence of any better advice, I'd suggest you make one. You have a couple of options, fabricate a ground plane antenna, starting with one of the 1/4 of 5/8ths wave mobile antennas that are readily available; or a frequency-specific discone.

Sorry I don't have any plans ready to hand, but a Google search should turn something up.

There is/was somebody who made 800 MHz antennas, the most commonly seen model mounted on a handheld scanner, but I recall they made others.

I used one of Larry's high-gain 800 MHZ antennas, with home-made base radiators & a short (15 ft) run of rg-6 and was quite pleased. Ended up shifting to a yagi due to intermod troubles....but unless you are surrounded by Nextel, etc, you'll be quite pleased.

Dwayne, I once made my own 800 MHz base antenna. Basically, I just got an 800 Mhz 3db gain mobile antenna, and mounted it in the center of an 8 inch diameter aluminum disk. I made a "pigtail" by cutting off the small mobile coax about a foot from the base of the (NMO) mount, and installed a type N female connector. I fabricated an "L" mounting bracket and fastened it to the aluminum disk, and mounted it atop my tower. I fed it with low loss coax with an N male connector at the antenna. I used it for many years, and it worked very well.

Nothing beats a real 800MHz base antenna for listening to 800MHz at your base. This includes jury rigged mobile base converter setups, homemade antennas, etc. However, you have to pay a little more if you want this level of performance. You will be rewarded with excellent performance however.

Did anyone mention a 8 element Yagi avail from "The Antenna Guy" for about $90 + shipping.
I put one up 20ft w/ 9913 coax and got 3 more bars on the S-meter on my BC296D.
