Well I have a few extra bucks to push around and right now I'm looking for a scanner with the following specs:

Possibly under $100
Handheld
Air
Fire/Police/EMS

Is there a decent model out there?

Great little scanner for 30 bucks, even if you have to buy a new battery they can be had for 20 bucks or less:

No good if your area is going trunking/digital though, but a lot more useful than the sporty.

This one has Close Call for hunting down those elusive Wal Mart frequencies.

To get anything more like trunking (analog only) and CTCSS/DCS you will need to get into the $200-$300 range.

Hope this helps

A hundred bucks??? Is money burning a hole in your pocket? Wait a few of months if you can and save your chicken feed! That way you have more options to play with like digital. If you don't want to monitor digital then explore around pawnshops. They often have some handhelds. You might get lucky and find a used one that can do PL codes. Go to yardsales and read the classifieds in the newspaper. I often see some good deals on scanners but I already have enough to confuse my ears on.

pawnbrokers have terrible prices on scanners. In fact, most of the time used scanners are NOT a good deal. Unlike other types of radio equipment, there is no bennefit of going with an older unit. In scanners, generally newer is better.

right now www.scannermaster.com has very good deals on GRE scanners.

The PSR-100 is only $80, down from it's normal $100. This is the scanner to buy if you do not need trunking. Trunking is important, but not exactly 100% needed depending on where you live. I live in central Connecticut, which is one of the densest regions in the USA. The listening radius that I have on my scanner is about 20 miles. Within this radius, only 5 or 6 cities are trunked. My local PD and PD to each adjacent city are not trunked. In fact, some towns around me are dumping their trunked systems and going back to conventional.

Now, say you do want the ability to hear trunked systems, you would step up to the PSR-300. Excellent scanner and the only thing you cannot hear are digital systems. The only digital systems around me are one town to the south, one on the edge of my hearing radius, and the state PD. I would love to be able to hear them, but a digital scanner costs far too much for me to spend on this hobby right now. The PSR-300 is on sale for $169, down from $199. I have had one a year and it has been a VERY good scanner. Holds many more frequencies and you can Alpha-tag them, which means that you will see a name you type on the screen when the scanner stops scanning. i.e. On the PSR-100 you would see 460.5500 and hear a police dept. On the PSR-300 you would see 460.5500 ENFIELD CT POLICE and hear the police dept.

If you are not familar with pawnshops they are in business for more money! Anyone they see with"chump" wrote on their forehead of course they will try to con you. Its like a car dealership. Haggle them with their prices. They pay squat compared to what prices they want.

If you are familar with scanner models and what the going price is for "used" argue with the pawnshop broker. If all else fails to lower the price tell the pawn shop dude to go **** himself and leave the store. This will give you some entertainment to listen to if you already have a scanner and hear the cops being dispatched to "Crackheads Pawnshop".

The internet is good too for looking for scanners. Make sure its a reputable dealer and not some overseas crackhead with a computer website.
